Description	:	ARAPAHOE -- Glen V. James, 88, died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2006) at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge. He was born May 28, 1918, at Hendley, to Baxter and Jenny (Johnson) James. He grew up in the Hendley area and graduated from Hendley High School in 1935. He worked at the CC Camp at Ravenna and farmed near Gering, before entering the Army in May of 1942. James, 88, died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2006) at Cambridge Memorial Hospital in Cambridge. He was born May 28, 1918, at Hendley, to Baxter and Jenny (Johnson) James. He grew up in the Hendley area and graduated from Hendley High School in 1935. He worked at the CC Camp at Ravenna and farmed near Gering, before entering the Army in May of 1942. He served in France and Omaha Beach and was a survivor of the D-Day invasion. He was discharged in October of 1945 and returned to Nebraska. On Dec. 20, 1947, he married Norma E. McConnell, at Beaver City. They farmed in Hendley, Bartley and Holbrook until 1965. They then moved to Arapahoe and operated James Recreation restaurant. In 1969, he began working as a mail carrier in the Arapahoe area. He retired in 1986 and worked as a carpenter for Merle Stagemeyer for many years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Hendley and the American Legion in Wilsonville and Arapahoe for 60 years. He also served on the Arapahoe City Council and Cemetery Board. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma on Sept. 10, 2004; one brother, Dwight James; and a sister, Zetta Kinder. Survivors include three sons, Melvin and wife, Sharon of Axtell, Merlin and Mike both of Arapahoe; four daughters, Dona Laverack and husband, Paul of Funk, Roberta Upson of Waseca, Minn., Kathy Graf and husband, Mark, and Polly Clay all of Araphoe; 13 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Funeral services are Saturday at 10 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Arapahoe, with the Rev. R.L. Malchow officiating. Burial will follow at the Hendley Cemetery in Hendley, with military rites given by the Americal Legion Post No. 96 of Arapahoe. Condolences and personal reflections can be left at www.wenburgfuneralhome.com. Visitation will be today until 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. at the funeral home and prior to services at the church on Saturday. Wenburg Funeral Home of Arapahoe is in charge of arrangements.
