Read More	Glendolyn Hope Mendenhall born September 22, 1929, died peacefully surrounded by family on January 10, 2021. Hope Mendenhall never met a stranger. She gave so much and asked for so little in return. Throughout her life Hope placed a great emphasis on family, farming, and the community. She was born in Van Wert, Iowa, the third of eight children, to Esther (Smith) and Glen Barton. Hope grew up in the Woodland, Iowa area, graduating from Leon High School in Leon, Iowa. Hope always had a love of numbers and put her intelligence to use working in the bank in Leon followed by her bookkeeping and tax business until her death. For over 30 years, she clerked the Humeston Livestock Auction, Grant City Livestock Auction, 4-H livestock auction at county fairs plus farm and estate auctions. Hope was active with 4-H beginning in 1953 as a leader, taking on many roles within the local clubs and county positions. She was always the first one to step up and help out with any projects. This culminated in her induction into the 4-H Hall of Fame in 2020. Hope’s other community passions were the Decatur County Cattlemen’s Association, who honored her as a founding member in 2020, and the McClung House in Garden Grove, which became one of her biggest projects. The McClung House started as a bed and breakfast, which grew into hosting dinners monthly for the public as well as special events. This endeavor was one of her greatest joys. Hope was never one to back down from the fight. She worked closely with Neil Harl of Iowa State University during the 1980’s farm crisis to put a moratorium of farm closures. The related lawsuit resulted in making the USDA follow the Farm Bill. Hope was at the heart of the family farm working tirelessly beside Bob. Her love was being outdoors, gardening, hosting Mendenhall reunions, and welcoming everyone to the farm. She was an enthusiastic host and amazing cook, always offering an abundance of food no matter when you arrived or whether you were expected. If you visited the farm you never went away hungry or without a good laugh. Hope is survived by Robert, her husband of 67 years; children: Deb (Mike) Bengtson, Mark (Stephanie) Mendenhall, Marty (Tom) Carney, and Sam (Jane) Mendenhall; grandchildren: Zach (Beka) Mendenhall, Ann (Eric) Hofmann, Kelsey Carney, Kalle Carney, Justin (Alexa) Mendenhall, Libby Bengtson, Hanna Mendenhall, and Bridget Carney; great grandchildren: Ajae, Kendyl, Anessa and Joa Mendenhall, Sloan Hofmann, and Mason and Kipton Mendenhall; siblings: brother, Lester (Anne) Barton and sister, Margaret Christensen; sisters-in-law, Lila Mendenhall, and Lynn Mendenhall; and numerous nieces and nephews. By far Hope’s greatest joy was family. The pride she had for her family, extended family and the eighth generation family farm shined through every day. On Hope’s 91st birthday she said, “I have had the perfect life. I wanted to live on a farm, I’m doing that, I wanted four children - two boys and two girls, and we were blessed with just that.” Hope lived a full life
