Glenn attended grade school in Story County and graduated from McCallsburg, IA high school, he also took some courses from Iowa State College. He started his chick hatchery in an old wooden building in Madrid, IA. which had previously been occupied by a battery and tire shop. Within a year the move was made into the west portion of the present building. The new addition was built in August, 1945. In the beginning Glenn started with incubators to handle 29,000 eggs and at that time the percentage of hatch was not as good as it is today. His capacity then was 6,000 chicks per week or 60,000 chicks the first year but at the present with all the latest equipment he can hatch 175,000 chicks. When he first went into the hatchery business egg production was much different than it is today. A hen was considered a topnotcher if she laid 135 eggs in a year but the hen of today must produce more than 200 eggs in that period or she is a cull. During the first 15 to 17 years of operating the hatchery he shipped millions of broiler chicks to places as distant as Billings, MT., and Denver and even trucked them to Arkansas. He was hatching chicks the year round. At one time during a rail strike it was necessary to haul them out of here by truck and car in order to make room to take off the next hatch. During his first year in business he was among the first to get a flock of the new breed of New Hampshires. The demand was so heavy he ended up as one of the largest hatchers of the breed in the state. It was necessary to take eggs from 29 flocks to keep up with the demand. Few chickens are raised now for broilers, especially in this area, so most of the chicks hatched are for egg production. Nine years ago they took the contract to hatch DeKalb chicks, a revolutionary thing in the business. He bought breed stock from them and delivered them to the farmers. Glenn has a farm located a mile west of Madrid and will spend his time out there raising chickens and cattle and doing general farming but still plans to help his son Wendell who has taken over management during the busy season. Glenn has served on the local school board for 15 years, was president of the Madrid Community Club a couple of times and is a past president of the Lions Club. He is an active member of the Church of God and has served in nearly all capacities on the church board. He had been a Sunday School superintendent for many years. He holds the people of Madrid in the highest esteem but can recall several people who had been in business here, having left feeling sour toward the town. He strongly believes they were wrong. The Madrid Hatchery has had an "Open House" every year since they have been in business but "Pancake Day" has become the most popular. Every year but two they have had a get together and dinner for their flock owners. The first one was held in the hall above English Rexall Drug and a group of local ladies served it. They even had to borrow the Lions Club dishes to accommodate the group. In addition to his hobby of photography, he admits that he likes to eat pretty well. He and Opal have traveled and boast at being in every state but one. Glenn retired in 1960.
