Description	:	Glenn was born in Fonda, Iowa. At an early age he moved with his family to the Kanawha area. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. In 1934 he moved to a farm in the Stilson area. He received his education in the Kanawha and Stilson areas. Glenn was drafted 06 January 1943 into the US Army. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith. In 1934 he moved to a farm in the Stilson area. He received his education in the Kanawha and Stilson areas. Glenn was drafted 06 January 1943 into the US Army. His army records gives his height as 5' 9½"; weight 166 lbs., with blue eyes and brown hair. Basic training was at Camp Roberts in California. He served two years, 9 months and 21 days as a member of the 169th Infantry Regiment, 43rd Division, United States Army during World War II. He was a part of Headquarters Company, made up of M1 riflemen and a anti tank platoon. Glenn fought for six months on New Caldonia, New Georgia (7/7/1943 -"The 43rd Infantry Division engaged Japanese forces in heavy combat on New Georgia Island near Guadalcanal. Their objective was the capture of Munda Airfield under construction by the Japanese. The Airstrip was finally secured in August 1943.") and the Solomon islands. His company got some R and R in New Zealand before moving on to New Guinea, Southern Philippines and the invasion of Luzon. The 169th was part of the first wave that landed on the beach near Mabilao, Lingayen Gulf, Luzon on 09 January 1945. Under enemy fire, the Division secured the beachhead and fought into the Lingayen Plain. During the period of 15–21 January 1945, all three infantry battalions of the 169th Regiment earned the Distinguished Unit Citation award for their gallantry in action amid the rugged hills of Luzon. "I want you to know that I realize that you have marched more miles over very difficult and rugged terrain, met and killed more Japs, and suffered more casualties than any other unit in this campaign. Your splendid achievements are in keeping with the best traditions of the American Army and typify the fighting, shooting, slugging infantry. I, together with every member of this Division, are proud to be serving with you and commend you for heroic action." Leonard F. King Major General, US Army Up to this point in the Battle of Luzon, the 169th had lost 17 officers and 248 enlisted men KIA, and 45 officers and 789 enlisted men WIA. They had managed to inflict (by actual count) 2,786 Japanese dead. By 1 March, the 169th was near Clark Field and Fort Stotsenburg. For the next three weeks they battled the fanatical resistance of the Japanese in and around Fort Stotsenburg. On 21 March 1945 near the hills of Fort Stotsenburg, Glenn was wounded in the left thigh by shrapnel from a Japanese mortar shell. He was evacuated to the army hospital in Leyte. After he recovered he returned to his outfit and went to Japan as part of the US Occupation of Japan, garrisoning Kumagaya Airdrome. Glenn faithful wrote home although all letters were reviewed by censors. Here is one to his brother. Oct. 1, 1943 Million miles from no place! Dear Norman, I got three letters from you last night so I'll just have to sit down this morning and try to answer them. You write about the best and most interesting letters that I get. There is lots of interesting things going on around here too, but you know we can' tell much over here. I suppose all my letters sound about the same but I do my best anyway. I'm still fine and dandy and ornery as ever! I like it here pretty well, of course, give me good old Iowa any day. We get all our candy, gum, toilet articles and smokes and things like that free, from the Red Cross so we live like kings over here! I sure feel sorry for your poor civilians back in the states (like heck). The eats are getting better all the time but I'd give a whole lot for some of Mom's cooking right now. They put so much sugar in the coffee that it don't hardly run out of the cups! Most of them like it that way I guess but I'd rather drink it straight. We get quite a bit pie and cake now too. We sleep in something they call jungle-bunks. It's like a hammock with a top on it and mosquito netting all around you. There is a big zipper on one side where you get in and out and it really makes a dandy place to sleep. The only trouble is to keep right side up! Once you're all zipped up in it and it turns over you have to call for help to get you out. Aunt Lillie would enjoy a jungle bunk, I think! Everybody seems to be busy writing letters, I don't know what they find to write about. So I now own another calf, huh! Ask pa how much of a feed bill I've got now. I'm glad to hear that you got to run the tractor to cut oats. Suppose you'll get to pick the corn too. I got letters from Leonard and Mae, Harold and Astrid, and Carrie Ann too the other night. Sure nice to get mail. I don't see how Cyril and Howard can tell where they're at, unless its because they're not in a combat zone. How are you getting along with your school work this year? He was awarded the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star. He returned to farming in the Stilson, Iowa area until his retirement in 1983. He never married. Glenn was 69 when he died.
