Mehl (1893 Kvinnherred SB) appears in the 1900 census for 1224 Kvinnherreds on the Mehl family farm (Circuit - Kvinndherreds 8, Farm #85, Farm Unit #3, Farm - Mehl). He is at home with his parents, Gunder A. Mehl (1852) & Kari J. Mehl (1848) and siblings, Johannes G. Mehl (1876, general farm laborer), Anna Martha G. Mehl (1878, cattle tender), Andreas Olai G. Mehl (1880, general farm laborer), Kristi Elisebeth G. Mehl (1883, Husarbeider), Gunder G. Mehl (1885), Lars G. Mehl (1888) and Karl Martin G. Mehl (1890). His grandfather, Johannes Torbjørnsen Mehl (1806) was living with them. Gunner was a "Gaardsbrug S" - farmer. They were raising grain & potatoes, had livestock and a orchard. 1910 census for 1224 Kvinnhered: Mehl family farm (Census District: Rosendal, Parish: Kvinnherred, Municipality: Kvinnherred, Farm: Mehl, Farm No. 85, Property No. 3) - Edvard Gundersen (01.01.1894, Kvinnherred, working on a farm). "Bygdebøker for Kvinnherad 3" and the "Emigrants from Kvinnherad sailing from Bergen" records his full name as being Lars Edvard Gunnarsson Mehl. He went by "Edvard". Lars Edvard Gunnarson Mel (1894) "Utflyttede" moved out of Kvinnherad Parish on 17 March 1913. He is listed in the records of "Emigrants from Kvinnherad sailing from Bergen" (#438) as departing for Amerika when he was 19 on 22 March 1913 aboard a "Cunard Line" vessel. He was traveling with Albert Jensen Seglem, Jens Abelsen Seglem, Ole Kristoffersen Mehl, Knut Torrisson Hatteberg (1895) and Martha Olsdtr Omvik. They were heading for Fonda, Iowa. The two Seglem boys and Ole Kristoffersen Mehl were already residents in Iowa. "The Cunard Line never had direct sailing between Norway and North American harbors. Their transatlantic ships departed from Liverpool and their main destinations were Boston and New York. Norwegians who bought their tickets to travel on the Cunard Line steamers had to travel via Liverpool. The most common way to go was by Wilson Line Steamship from the Norwegian port to Hull in England. From Hull they would travel by train to Liverpool. In Liverpool they would some times have to stay for a couple of days. There were several hotels and boarding houses that were operated by the different transatlantic companies in Liverpool." Source: Sons of Norway Ellis Island immigrations documents show him as a passenger aboard the steamboat S.S. FRANCONIA (page 19, line 11). It left from Liverpool, England, 29 March 1913 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on 7 April 1913. He was traveling to the US with a number of others from Rosendal including brothers, Knut and Jens Hatteberg, Albert and Jens Seglem, Martha Omvik, and Ole Christoffersen. They all traveled steerage and listed Fonda, Iowa as their destination. Edward was described as being a laborer, 5' 6" in height, of light complexion, with blond hair and blue eyes. He paid $300 for the passage. Actually it was paid by a cousin (Markus Johannesen Hatteberg 1879-1961) in Minnesota for whom he worked for for two years to pay him back. When his two years were completed, Ed settled in Fonda, Iowa where his brothers, Lars and Martin, farmed. ******************************************************************************* Edward Mehl (23), of Fonda, Iowa, single and farming for his first cousin, Martin Mehl in Calhoun County, signed up for his World War I Draft Registration Card on 5 June 1917. He and his brothers, Lars & Martin registered together in Williams Precinct, Calhoun County, Iowa. He was "an alien", born 1 January 1894 in Rosendal, Norway and a citizen of that country. He is described in the registrar's report as being of medium height, stout build, with brown eyes and brown hair. Ed returned to Norway to visit his family in 1920 for six months. Before he left he became engaged to Anna Peterson. This was the last time he visited his native home. When he returned to the US he sailed from Kristiania, Akershus, Norway on 7 August 1920 and arrived in Ellis Island, New York 16 August 1920 on board the "Norske Amk Line III" - S.S. BERGENSFJORD. Both "Emigrants from Kvinnherad sailing from Bergen" and Ellis Island Immigration Records document this trip. He was traveling with his 1st cousin, Ole Johan Hatteberg (1887) from Slater, Iowa. Five months later Edward Mehl married Anna Matilda Peterson on 22 January 1921 at the Lutheran parsonage in Kanawha, Iowa. "Miss Anna M. Peterson and Mr. Edward G Mehl were married at Kanawha last Saturday. The bride is a sister to Mrs.Ole Andersen and is well known by a number of our citizens. She is a very fine young lady, and is well fitted for a successful and happy homemaker. The groom is an industrious and successful young farmer and has the respect and confidence of all his neighbors. They will make their home at Fonda, Iowa," Edward and Anna were 2nd cousins - their great grandparents were Thorbjørn Iversen Mehl & Kari Larsdatter Mehl. Edward Mehl (31 Norway) is found in the 1925 Iowa State Census (01 Jan 1925) for Cedar Township, Pocahontas County, Iowa (line 99-101) along with his wife, Anna Mehl (33 Illinois) and son, Glen Mehl (3 Iowa). Both Ed & Anna had 8 years on education. Ed's parents were Gunder Mehl (74 Norway) & Kari Mehl (78 Norway) married in Norway; Anna's parents were Lars Peterson (73 Sweden) & Martha Johnson (Norway 63) married in Illinois. Ed was involved in agricultural pursuits. They were affiliated with the Lutheran Church. They were parents to two sons, Glenn and Norman. In 1929 they moved to a farm near Kanawha, Iowa. Edward Mehl (36 Norway) is counted in the 1930 United States Federal Census (18-19 April 1930) for Magor Township, Hancock County, Iowa (sheet 3A, dwelling 47) along with his wife, Anna Mehl (37 Illinois) and children, Glen Mehl (8 Iowa) and Norman (2 4/12 Iowa). A Torkel Jacobson (37 Norway, boarder), was living with them. Ed was 26 & Anna 27 when they married. He immigrated in 1913 and was an alien. Edward was farming. Edward Mehl (45 Norway) is enumerated in the 1940 United States Federal Census (17-18 April 1940) for Boone Township (Section 13), Hancock County, Iowa (sheet 3B, family 44) along with his wife, Anna Mehl (47 Illinois) and children, Glenn Mehl (18 Iowa) and Norman Mehl (12 Iowa). Anna's sister, Lily Peterson (44 Illinois, practical nurse) was living with them. They had lived in the same house in 1935. Ed, Anna, Glenn & Lilly had 8th grade educations. Ed was farmer. Edward Gunderson Mehl died 16 July 1970 at the age of 76. He never did become a US citizen. His Alien Registration Number was 5191763. Edward Mehl BRITT - Funeral services for Edward Mehl, 76, Britt area farmer who died Thursday at a Mason City hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Stilson. Born Jan. 1, 1894 in Rosendal, Hardanger, Norway, he came to the United States when he was 19 years old. Jan. 22, 1921, he was married to Anna Peterson in Kanawha. They farmed near Fonda and Kanawha before moving to Britt. The Rev. Paul V. Clements, pastor of the United Methodist Church, will officiate, and burial will be in the Amsterdam Township Cemetery, Kanawha. Friends may call at the Boughton Funeral Home from noon Saturday until Monday morning. Mr. Mehl is survived by his wife, two sons, Glenn and Norman, both of Britt, two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews. He was prodded in death by eight brothers and sisters.
