CARTER Great Northern Light Engine, Rounding a Curve Where the Track Leaves the River Near Newport, Went Down an embankment, Carrying Three Men With It. NEWPORT, Wash, Dec. 1. - Accident which may cost the life of Engineer G. C. Carter occurred on the Great Northern railway one mile east of Newport this afternoon. Light engine 728, running as the second section of No. 4 left Newport about 3 pm., and while rounding a curve where the track leaves the river bank it is supposed the tender left the truck, dragging the engine with it down a 50 foot embankment. Neither Engineer Carter nor Conductor C. Huffington, who were in the end seats, had moment's warning of the Impending disaster. Fireman James Lynch, who was on the engine's deck, putting in a fire, felt the tank jump the rail, but had no a venue of escape and went down with the engine unconscious of anything further until rescued from beneath the cab. He was only slightly injured, while Conductor Buffington was badly bruised about the head and shoulders. His right arm and leg sustained severe bruises. Engineer Carter was pinned beneath the engine and scalded considerably by escaping steam and water from the boiler. He also sustained a fracture of the skull, as well as severe body bruises, and is supposed to have received internal injuries that will probably prove fatal. Engine 72, running as third No. 4 was closely following the ill fated engine, and on discovery of the accident returned to Newport immediately for medical assistance. Dr. Phillips was taken to the scene of the wreck and transferred the injured men to Newport, where their wounds were dressed and everything possible done to aleviate their suffering A special train was dispatched from Spokane, arriving here about 7:30, having on board. In addition to the company's officers, Dr. Russell and Dr. Dutton, who transferred Carter to conch and he was taken to the Sacred Heart hospital for further treatment. The engine is a total wreck, and lies at the bottom of steep embankment. The escapes of Buffington and Lynch with their lives is nothing short of a miracle.
