She was in the tender loving care of the beloved staff of Clarksville Skilled Nursing & Rehab Center at the time of her death. “A Life Well Lived is a Life Full of Love” Gloria Theo “Tedi” Nellor Fredrick, daughter of Clara Rose Wilhelmina Pautsch Nellor and William McKinley “Max” Nellor, was born April 18, 1931 in Moorhead, Iowa. She lived there with her parents and sisters Patricia Joanne and Constance Dee until the family moved to Auburn, Iowa in 1936 and to Charter Oak, Iowa in 1938 where she was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She always loved the story of how her middle name came to be Theo and her nickname Tedi. Her father Max was a twin born in the election year between William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt. Their father was in the newspaper business and wishing to remain impartial, he named his twin sons after both of the candidates. Adoring his twin brother Theodore Roosevelt Nellor, William McKinley Nellor chose his daughter’s middle name as Theo and called her Ted or Tedi as she is best known today. Tedi attended Auburn then Charter Oak Public Schools and graduated as class valedictorian in 1948. During high school she was a basketball star who never missed a free throw and was the captain of the team that went to the State Championship in Des Moines. She played as an unstoppable forward on the court and her dad referred to her as Stonewall. She lived a good life and loved growing up in the successful small town of Charter Oak where her mom Clara was a teacher, a musician and called for the news and, as the editor of the local newspaper The Charter Oak Times, her dad Max printed it. She was close to her parents, her sister Pat, her Grandma Pautsch, her Aunt Leona and her Uncle Tillie who all resided there. Tedi attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, now known as the University of Northern Iowa, and graduated with a Standard Elementary Teacher’s Certificate on February 24, 1950, shortly before her 19th birthday. She was employed by Clarksville Community Schools as a second grade teacher February 25, 1950 through May, 1952. She was very fond of her students and they of her as some of whom remain in touch with her to this day. There she met her husband while taking tickets at a basketball game where her future brother-in-law was the coach. She married Arnold Alfred Fredrick, born October 31, 1927 in Strawberry Point, Iowa, on April 19, 1952. They lived in Iowa City where Arnie received his Bachelor of Science and Commerce Degree from the University of Iowa. While in Iowa City, their daughter Candace Jo was born on December 13, 1952. In 1953 they moved to Waverly, Iowa where their son Thomas William was born on December 1, 1958 and where Tedi has lived for the past 66 years. She was a proud and faithful member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church the entire time. She taught pre-school at St. Paul’s Lutheran School for 11 years, from 1970-1981. She also worked for the Wartburg College Film Service and volunteered for Bartels Lutheran Home. In addition to being an exemplary wife and mother and a successful teacher, she was involved in many church and community organizations and endeavors. Tedi was a long time member of Matthias Circle, Music and Drama Club Division of Waverly Women’s Club, Waverly Hospital Auxiliary and PEO Chapter BC serving in many leadership capacities and providing many inspired programs. She was both a Brownie Scout and Cub Scout Leader as well as a PTA Officer and Senior Luther League Advisor. Newspapers were important to her having grown up in the business, and she worried that print papers might cease to exist in her lifetime. Thankfully that did not happen so subscribing to four she could keep up with current events. She was an avid sports fan, watching and reading about all types and levels of teams. There was a time not long ago when she knew where all the pros went to college and where most of the collegiates went to high school. She even got into watching golf on TV when that was the only choice. Basketball was her favorite but she enjoyed football and baseball as well. After Arnie died of cancer on June 27, 1995 at age 67, Tedi carried on as an independent young widow remaining the stalwart of her multigenerational family, keeping everyone close and making sure everyone was loved and cared for. In addition to her husband, she provided end-of-life care to her mother, her aunt and her husband’s siblings. She provided tender loving care to her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, her sister and in-law’s, her nieces and nephews and countless friends. Tedi was known as the best cook of all time and the hostess with the most-est. Any invitation to her home was a rare treat where she entertained with panache all the while assuring that everyone felt welcome and comfortable. She refinished woodwork and furnishings and refurbished her exquisite home built in 1909. Husband Arnie called her the “Best Stripper in Town” when it came to her woodworking skills. Her gorgeous handwriting and eloquent writing on cards and notes made any mail from her desired and treasured. Tedi was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She was elegant and classy, sophisticated and charming, fashionable and trendy, witty and intelligent, gracious and thoughtful, genuine and proud through and through. She cared deeply for everyone fortunate enough to know her and she loved with her whole heart. We are comforted that she is whole again in a place where she can see with both eyes, walk with both legs, stand tall and proud, shoot some hoops, cook some food, write some thank you notes and be reunited with all of her loved ones who no doubt are rejoicing that she is safe and sound in their loving arms. In addition to her husband Arnie in 1995, she is preceded in death by her father Max in 1971, her mother Clara in 1995, her infant sister Constance Dee in 1935, her beloved 19 year old granddaughter, Kacie Brekhus in 2003, her in-law’s, Arnie’s siblings and their spouses, Erma and Howard Eppler, Deleva and Earnie Oppermann, Lillian and Arn Jahr, Gladys and Frank Burge, Donna Andersen and Bill and Shirley Fredrick. Left to cherish her ever honored memory are her daughter Candi and son-in law Mel Brekhus of Southlake TX, her son Tom Fredrick of Leawood Kansas, her grandson Tom Brekhus, his wife Mandy and their children Cora and Ella of Southlake, TX, her grandson Rayner Fredrick and his wife Heather of Nashville, TN, her grandson Matthew Fredrick and his girlfriend, Marisa Morris of Lawrence, KS, her sister Pat Nellor Wickwire and brother-in-law Jim of Hermosa Beach, CA, her brother-in-law Ray Fredrick of Waverly, IA, numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 24 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Kaiser Corson Funeral Home Waverly. Please join the family for a Celebration of Tedi’s Life on Wednesday, April 24 at the Waverly Golf & Country Club following the visitation at 7:00 PM. The funeral service will be Thursday, April 25 at 11:00 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Waverly, with Pastor Arthur Bergren officiating. The committal service will immediately follow at Harlington Cemetery Waverly. Lunch at St. Paul’s will immediately follow the committal service. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and School in Tedi’s memory. Kaiser Corson Funeral Home Waverly is assisting the family.
