Death early on Wednesday night removed, one of the oldest pioneers of this district, and a much respected resident of the community, in the person of Mr. Godfrey Bauer The late Mr. Bauer, who was in his 87th year, was, born on September 9, 1858, at Teebar Cattle Station. Teebar in those days was owned by the late John Eaton, whose holding then embraced a very extensive belt of country, and carried large herds of cattle.It was in those early boyhood years that Mr. Bauer gained his first knowledge of cattle, with which in one capacity or another he was closely associated throughout the greater part of his life. In his prime he was a recognised authority among cattle, notably beef cattle, and had the expert cattleman's ready ability to pick out a good beast and assess its worth, particularly in his capacity as a drover and a butcher. He left Teebar with his late parents at an early age, and lived for a time on the Nerada-road. and later on the Old Gympie-road, Tinana. He became associated with a Mr. Pyne, of Tiaro, and travelled the district on many droving trips as far south as Brisbane. There were no good roads' programmes in those days, and a drover had to know his country well and his cattle, too, and moreover, to have a sympathetic understanding of the aborigine. The late Mr. Bauer was not only a good bushman and a top hand with cattle, but he got along well with the natives. He had many interesting anecdotes of those early days, notably dealing with native habits and customs and superstitions. He was also well known throughout the district, and his name is highly esteemed in many old-established district homes. The deceased also worked for many years in the butchering trade at Tiaro and Childers. but finally the family settled in Maryborough, where Mr. Bauer was associated as a butcher, with Bookers, O'Regans. Mycocks and other firms. He had lived in retirement in recent years. The late Mr. Bauer, whose wife predeceased him seven years ago, is survived by six sons and two daughters — namely, Messrs. William G., George H. and Robert J. Bauer (Maryborough), Edward G., Frederick F., and Alfred E. Bauer (Brisbane), and Mesdames E O. Hulett (Rockhampton) and N. Clarke (Maryborough).
