Gordon was born in West Union on November 7, 1940 to Arnold Henry and Helen Emily (Granger) Lauer. He was bapitized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Hawkeye. Gordon graduated from West Central High School in 1958. He attended Upper Iowa University and graduated in 1962 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He taught school for a short time in Lowden, Iowa. He was united in marriage to Barbara (Miner) Lauer on July 16, 1961, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fayette. In 1963, Gordon joined Lauer and Lauer Insurance and German Mutual. He graduated from the University of Illinois with an insurance degree in 1968. Gordon served on the Professional Insurance Agents of Iowa and Mutual Insurance Board. Gordon was an active community member, serving on the West Union Fire Department, Rotary, and Palmer Lutheran Hospital Board of Directors. He earned West Union’s “Citzen of the Year Award” in 1989. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and Iowa State athletics. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in West Union. Gordon is survived by two sons, Terry Lauer of San Jose, CA and Michael (Lynn) Lauer of West Union; grandchildren, John Lauer and Morgan Lauer; a sister, Sandra (Dr. Stanley) Day of Freeland, WA; two aunts, Marge Wenthe and Marjorie Ballinger; a niece, Deborah Day; niece-in-law, Kelly Day; a great-niece, Talia and great-nephew, Zachary. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barb; parents, Arnold and Helen; and nephew, Jeff Day. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Zion Lutheran Church in West Union with Rev. Ron Roberts officiating. A public visitation will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm on Monday, July 6, 2015 at Burnham-Wood Funeral Home in West Union. Burnham-Wood & S.K. Rogers Funeral Home of West Union is in charge of arrangements.
