Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Madrid. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery, east of Madrid. Read More	Gordon Cook "Sarge" Shoeman, 94, passed from this life on Thursday, December 29, 2005 at the Madrid Home in Madrid, where he had been a resident since June of this year. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2006 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Madrid. Burial with military honors will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery, east of Madrid. Gordon was born on May 24, 1911 in Waukee, Iowa, the second son of Robert Martin and Mamie Greta (Cook) Shoeman. He grew up on his parents' farm in Waukee. Gordon joined the United States Army, of which he served for 20 years and achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4th Class. Early in his career, he served at Fort Des Moines, Hawaii, and Panama. While on assignment as a recruiter in Boone, IA, Gordon met Mildred May Merriam of Ogden, IA, whom he would later marry. On December 27, 1940, in Des Moines, while on leave from Fort Benning, GA, Gordon and Mildred were united in marriage. Their first son, Reginald Dennis was born two days before Pearl Harbor at Station Hospital in Fort Benning. Gordon spent the next three war years in England, France and North Africa before returning to the states. He was then assigned to Ft. Sill, OK, where their first daughter, Janice and second son, Gordon R. were both born. The young family sailed from New York to join Gordon on his tour of duty in Germany, where they lived for the next three and a half years. Their second daughter Jeanne Marie was born at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt. Gordon's next military assignment was at Ft. Williams in Portland, ME, where their third daughter, Joan was born at the Naval Hospital in Kittery. Following an assignment of 18 months in Korea, Gordon and his family returned to Iowa, where their third son, Robert was born. Later, he was honorably discharged. In 1955, the family moved to Madrid, where they made their home. Gordon retired from Firestone in 1974. He was a lifetime member of the Madrid V.F.W. Post #5060. Gordon loved to plant trees for his family, exercise and learn alternative health methods. Gordon was known as an ‘exercise fanatic'. He enjoyed riding his bicycle for miles from Madrid to almost Slater, and then back to Madrid. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and raising his hunting dogs. Most of all, Gordon loved spending time with his family. He was a loyal, loving husband, father and grandfather. Honoring him are his wife of 65 years, Mildred Shoeman of Madrid; three sons, Reginald D. Shoeman of Madrid, Gordon R. Shoeman and his wife Janet of West Des Moines and Robert Shoeman and his wife Cindy of Coeur D' Alene, ID; three daughters, Janice Peterson and her husband Roger of Madrid, Jeanne Paulson and her husband Gary of Johnston and JoAn Vial and her husband Steve of Mooresville, NC; one sister, Mary Schamerhorn of Des Moines; seven grandchildren, Heidi Patterson, Robert Patterson, and Stephen Patterson, Noelle Purdy, Anna Shoeman, Jessica Shoeman, and Stacey Jo Vial; also, one great-granddaughter, Rachael Renee Purdy. In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Gohring; and one brother, John B. "Burton" Shoeman. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. on Monday, January 2, at the Sundberg-Kirkpatrick Funeral Home, where the family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the Madrid V.F.W.
