Description	:	Mildred May (Merriam) Shoeman, 97, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018, at the Madrid Home. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, September 29, at St. Paul’s UCC Church in Madrid. Interment will follow at Hillsdale Cemetery east of Madrid. Mildred was born April 19, 1921, in Mitchell, SD, the daughter of Edward Justin and Bertha Lora (Field) Merriam. She grew up in Mitchell and later Ogden, Iowa with her brother, Edward V. She graduated from Ogden High School in 1939. Following graduation, Mildred was employed as a telephone operator at the Marcy Mutual Telephone Company in Ogden. On a blind date in 1940, she met a handsome young Army recruiter, Gordon C. Shoeman, of Waukee. They were united in marriage in Des Moines, Iowa on December 27, 1940, and to this union were born six children. Mildred became a busy military wife and mother, moving wherever the Army sent Gordon every few years. They lived in Phenix City, AL, Columbus, GA, Lawton, OK, Frankfurt, Germany, and Cape Elizabeth, ME. Mildred always said her 3-½ years spent in Germany were among the happiest of her life. When Gordon was sent to Korea and Japan, Mildred and her children returned from Maine to Ogden to be near her parents while he was away. Following Gordon’s overseas assignment, he retired from the Army and the family moved to Madrid in 1955, where they purchased a home at 105 East 1st Street and raised their children. Their home remained in the family for nearly 56 years until Gordon and then Mildred each moved to the Cedars of Madrid, followed by the Madrid Home. Mildred was involved with Cub Scouts, serving as a Den Mother for several years. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Madrid, serving on various boards over the years, and was a member of the evening circle. She was a direct Mayflower descendant and was the granddaughter of Pilgrims John Alden, William Mullins, Priscilla Mullins, Edward Doty, Francis Cooke, Richard Warren, and Stephen and Elizabeth (Fisher) Hopkins, who all sailed to America in 1620 on the Mayflower. She was a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants and the Iowa Mayflower Society. Mildred was an expert seamstress and worked for Brown’s Cleaners for several years doing sewing from her home. She also did alterations and custom sewing for her daughters and local residents for many years. Many area residents wore her beautifully sewn garments or had custom-made draperies hanging at the windows in their homes. Mildred thoroughly enjoyed traveling the U.S. and Canada with Gordon in their retirement years. They especially loved visiting old Army friends with whom they were stationed with at various Army posts throughout the U.S. and overseas. Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 65 years, Gordon, in 2005, and one brother, Edward V. Merriam of Ocean Springs, MS. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her six children: Reginald Shoeman of Madrid and Boulder, MT, Jan (Roger) Peterson of Madrid, Gordon R. (Janet) Shoeman of West Des Moines, Jeannie Shoeman and husband Gary Paulson of Des Moines, Joan (Steven) Vial of Mooresville, NC, and Robert (Cindy) Shoeman of Liberty Lake, WA; seven grandchildren, Noelle (Rick) Purdy of Collins, Anna Shoeman of Des Moines, Jessica (Nick) Borror of Des Moines, Heidi (Matt) Thornton of Las Vegas, NV, Robert Patterson of Cresco, Stephen (Shelby) Patterson of Johnston, and Stacey (Jameson) MacDonnell of New Orleans, LA; five great-grandchildren, Rachael Purdy, Gary Purdy, Stephen Patterson III, Sienna Patterson, and Savannah Patterson. Mildred was a warm and loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
