Gordon Frederick Lyng was born on November 10, 1927 on a farm five miles west of Dell Rapids, SD to Fred and Olga (Anderson) Lyng. The family moved to a farm west of Baltic in 1932 where they farmed for two years. They then moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1934. They became members of First Lutheran Church where Gordon was confirmed. For eight years during the depression, his father was out of work and performed odd jobs whenever possible. His father, along with he and his five siblings worked at whatever jobs possible to make a living. Gordon remembers delivering papers, shoveling snow, setting pins at the Rec Bowl, ushering at the Orpheum and Hollywood Theatre, and pulling weeds in gardens for 10 cents an hour as a way to contribute to the family. Gordon and Marjorie Gross were united in marriage on May 23, 1948 in Sioux Falls and were blessed with their son David on February 5, 1949. They were married over 67 years until her passing on March 17, 2015. Gordon began working at John Morrell and Company in 1943 and soon decided that was not the place for him. He then started working at Dairlyland Creamery from 1943-1952. In 1952 he became manager of Booth Fisheries Wholesale foods until 1963, at which time he formed Nordica Food Service. Along with his partners Al Schock, Ozzie Schock, and Bob Beck, they added Nordica Meats in Howard SD in 1968. With that, they also added warehousing to the list of operations. In 1979, Gordon sold Nordica Food Service to his son David. Since that date, son David operates the company with a business partner. The company is now called Nordica Warehoses Inc. a third party warehouse and logistics company. In 1979 Gordon and Marjorie moved to Winnipeg, Canada where he, with two partners, purchased the operation rights of 12 existing Bonanza restaurants. In 1981, Gordon purchased the remaining stock of the 2 partners. In 1989, Gordon sold the 12 restaurants and then franchised 60 additional restaurants spreading from Vancouver in the west to Toronto, Ontario in the east. Gordon and Marjorie then moved back to Sioux Falls, SD in 1989. At the age of 64, he opened Foghorns Restaurant at 12th & Kawanis Ave. When the lease expired in 1994, he and two partners established Boomers Restaurant at 26th & Sycamore and he stayed there until selling his stock to his partners in 2007. At 80 years young, Gordon teamed up with four other partners and opened Tinner’s Bar & Grill on 69th & Minnesota. Gordon was a fixture there until retiring at age 90. Gordon lived by the motto: “You will live longer if you have something to do.” He loved to meet people and watched his success thrive because of his hard work. During his lifetime, he was active in several clubs and groups. He was currently a huge part of the Morning Optimist Club and had been since joining back in 1958. Gordon was president of the Optimists in 1966 and president of the Boys Club. In 1968 he was the United Way Fund “Chairman of the Year” for generating the first 1 million dollars in giving. Gordon was Cub Scout Cub Master at Lincoln High School during the late 1950’s and was proud to the fact that out of 59 boys in that age group, they all became Cub Scouts. He was also a member of the Elks Club and Ducks Unlimited. Grateful for having shared his life his son, David Lyng and his wife, Mary, Sioux Falls, SD; four grandsons, Scott Tripp and his wife, Patricia, Brandon, SD, Steve Tripp and his wife, Nicole, Brandon, SD, Jay Tripp and his wife, Ashley, Valley Springs, SD, Brent Lyng and Amy Sagness, Brandon, SD; 10 great-grandchildren, Ashley, Cade, Clay, Braeden, Ava, Evan, Jayden, Briele, Donavon and Colton; brother-in-law, Kenneth Gross, Garretson, SD; and, a host of other relatives and friends. Lost but not forgotten are his parents Fred and Olga Lyng; wife, Marjorie Lyng; siblings, Kenneth (Carole) Lyng, Arlo Lyng, Marjorie (Tom) Kirby, Doris (Johnny) Clark, and Florence (Rocky) Ippolito; sister-in-law, Donna Gross; and brother-in-law, Robert Gross.
