He was born on May 6, 1919, in Hiram, Maine, the fourth of seven children of Clarence and Ada (Graffam) Kimball. A Maine native, he lived in Eliot for 64 years with his wife, Olive (Mudgett), who died in September 2007. A graduate of Fryeburg Academy, he began his working life as an apprentice carpenter. Read More	PORTSMOUTH — Gordon Lester Kimball, 89, died Tuesday, June 3, 2008, at SunBridge of Portsmouth. He was born on May 6, 1919, in Hiram, Maine, the fourth of seven children of Clarence and Ada (Graffam) Kimball. A Maine native, he lived in Eliot for 64 years with his wife, Olive (Mudgett), who died in September 2007. A graduate of Fryeburg Academy, he began his working life as an apprentice carpenter. Upon his retirement from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, he had attained a civil service rating equivalent to naval nuclear architect. He leaves two sons, David of Palm Desert, Calif., and Thomas of Gallipolis, Ohio, and a sister, Helen Ward, of Hiram, Maine. He was predeceased by a son, Bruce, who died as an infant in 1949. He also leaves three grandchildren, Jonathan of Morgantown, W.Va., Christopher (Claire) of Fairfax, Va., and Nicholas (Barbara) of Alexandria, Va.; and a great-granddaughter, Morrigan. WE REMEMBER: A master craftsman and finish carpenter, he built his family’s home in an apple orchard near the Eliot library. He and his brothers and brother-in-law cut and hauled timber from Hiram-area forests to be milled into the lumber used to construct his home. He enjoyed woodworking and disliked idleness; he preferred to be constantly puttering on a home improvement project, whether his own or for family and friends. In later years, he busied himself working jigsaw puzzles, assembling and disassembling them with the same methodical precision that he brought to every task. His dry humor and pithy Yankee wit were trademarks treasured by all who knew him.
