He was born June 12, 1905, in Buckingham County, Va., and had been a resident of Newport News for the last 50 years. He started his work career by teaching school in Buckingham County. Read More	Gordon Lewellyn Gentry Sr., age 99, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on Aug. 3, 2004, at Warwick Forrest in Newport News. He was born June 12, 1905, in Buckingham County, Va., and had been a resident of Newport News for the last 50 years. He started his work career by teaching school in Buckingham County. In 1929, Mr. Gentry began a 43-year career with the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway, starting as a telegraph operator. Among other assignments, he was station agent in Scottsville, Va., from 1948 to 1953, then moving to Lee Hall as station agent and railway express agent. Later in life, until age 94, he stayed close to his avocation of golf by serving as a part-time marshal at Deer Run Golf Course. He was always active in church and was ordained as a deacon at Fork Union Baptist Church in 1950. At Lee Hall Baptist Church he was a charter member, long-term deacon, Sunday school superintendent, and Church Trustee. He was also a 60-year member of Fork Union (VA) Masonic Lodge. In 1934, Mr. Gentry married Rosabel Baber, who preceded him in death in 1975. He married Pauline F. Rogers of Durham, N.C., in 1980. Survivors include his wife, Pauline (Polly) Gentry; daughter, Sylvia Gentry Richardson and her husband, Dr. Emmett V. Richardson Jr., of Marion, Va.; daughter, Jeanne G. Keck of Crownsville, Md.; son, Gordon L. Gentry Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Newport News; stepdaughter, LaRita Smith, and stepson, Larry Rogers, both of Durham, N.C.; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille G. Ranson and Annie Margaret G. Anthony, both of Richmond; and numerous nieces and nephews. All in his family were precious to him. He was blessed with a warm personality, sense of humor, and love of life that won him friends throughout his long life. His family will receive friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. in the Social Hall at Lee Hall Baptist Church, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 6. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Lee Hall Baptist Church, 17531 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23603, or to Friends of the Lee Hall Depot, Attention: Jennifer L.
