Last Thursday morning, this community was pained to learn of the death of one of our oldest and earliest settlers, Mr. Gottfied Mau, who for the past several years has been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Bertha Hendrickson [sic] of Jackson township, Crawford county, where he passed away with old age, the end having been hastened by poisoning of the life's blood, beginning in one of his lower limbs. Mr. Mau has been active up to about a month before the end, having been confined to his bed for only about two weeks, and the coming of the death angel was a surprise to the remaining relatives and friends of the deceased. Mr. Mau was born in Province Pomerin, Germany, August 31, 1828, where he remained for the first sixty years of his life, coming to the land of the free in July, 1888, settled in Crawford county, and during his residence here has made his home in Sac and Crawford the entire while. He was married in Germany, the first union being to Miss Charlott Pieper, at Parpart, March 2, 1655.[sic] To this union there were five children born. His first wife died in the old country December 10, 1864. Mr. Mau was again united in marriage May 16, 1865, to Miss Charlott Verweiba, who came to this country with him in 1888, bringing with them three children. To the second union there were five children born. His second wife passed to the home beyond August 18, 1889, just a year after the family had established itself comfortably in this country, leaving Mr. Mau once again with a family of children to look after who need a mother's watchful attention. Seven children remain to mourn the death of their aged parent namely: Julius Mau, Holstein; Ernestine [Dettbarn], Crawford County; [Franz] Mau, Westside; August Mau, Viola township; Lena Bombeck, Omaha, and Karl Mau, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Mr. Mau was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character, and sturdy constitution, and he continued to be active in his accustomed pursuits, that of farmer, til long past the age at which men ordinarily drop out of the ranks of workers. He met most of the conditions and situations of life as a practical matter of fact man, but had his own peculiar way of extracting merriment from life as it went along, and he was not disposed to worry about matters that could be bettered in other ways. He was invariably a good neighbor, and there was no happier family circle in the land than his until the death angel did from him take his beloved wife. When he died, full of years and ready to be gathered to his Father's, the grief that was felt over his long career was widespread and sincere. His best monument will be the good report he has left behind him in the community in which he has lived for these many years. Although MR. Mau was a member of no church, yet he was an attendant at the German Lutheran church when it was possible for him to get to the house of worship, and he ever exemplified by his pure and honorable life the teachings of the Golden Rule, and unfailing evinced a practical piety that will long be remembered as the best of professions. In temperament he was mild, conciliatory and candid; and yet remarkable for an uncompromising firmness. He gained confidence when he seemed the least to seek it, He believed in the fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. He believed that a man who scatters flowers in the pathway of his fellowmen, who lets into the dark places of life the sunshine of human sympathy, is following the footsteps of his Master. The funeral was held from the German Lutheran church in this city last Friday afternoon, the Rev. Discher officiating. Interment was at the Wall Lake cemetery. The remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of neighbors and friends, regardless of the fact that the wind was blowing a gale and the thermometer was registering below zero.
