In November of 1910 at the age of 5, he came to America with his adoptive parents, Anna and Christian Abegglen, who was his mother's sister. They settled in the Oconee, Nebraska area where Gottlieb attended District 25 grade school. He road the train to Monroe and graduated from Monroe High School. He continued his education in California and worked on a dairy and fruit farm. He moved back to Platte County, Nebraska to farm and later returned to the family farm near Oconee.
