Wernli, Popular Citizen, Claimed By Death G. L. Wernli, 84, a resident of Le Mars since the seventies and widely known in northwest Iowa in banking circles, passed away at the Sacred Heart hospital in this city Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Wernli had been in failing health for some time and last Friday was taken to the hospital. G. L. Wernli was born at Iola, Wis., November 10, 1857, and was a son of the late Professor Jacob Wernli, who was noted as an educator and scholer. The Wernli family came to Le Mars in 1875 and Gottlieb worked on the Wernli farm in Washington township and in the winter months taught in the country schools. Coming to town he was associated with a brother in the land and insurance business for a brief period and then entered the banking business and was connected with the First National bank of Le Mars for over fifty years, serving as clerk, cashier and vice president in the institution. For the past few years he has been secretary for the trusteed funds of the Old First National bank and worked constantly until within a few days of his last illness. A man of sterling integrity and honesty he enjoyed the confidence of all who knew him and his name will live in the annals of Le Mars. His courteous manners and friendly disposition gained him friends everywhere. He was a favorite in social circles and his home life was ideal. Mr. Wernli was married to Helen Foser, a member of a pioneer family in Hungerford township, October 12, 1881. She died July 17, 1930. He is survived by his son, Wallace Wernli, and a grandson, Wallace. Two of his children, a boy and a girl, died in infancy during an epidemic of diptheria which swept through Le Mars, bereaving many family in the eighties. He is survived by his brothers, George Wernli, of Los Angeles, Calif., Louis S. Wernli, Sioux City, Frank Wernli, Hazen, N. D., O. R. Wernli, Le Mars, and sisters, Mrs. C. E. Haas, Le Mars, Mrs. Chas. Paul, Minneapolis, Mrs. L. B. Schaefer, of Primghar, and Mrs. A. L. Livingstone of Paullina, Iowa. The funeral will be held this Friday afternoon at 2:30 in the Mauer chapel with Rev. W. M. Hubbard officiating. The pallbearers will be Harry Cannon, F. C. Hentges, J. G. Koenig, Otto Kuehn, R. J. M. Long and W. K. Veale.
