He was a farmer and a potter. Some of the children had to stay behind in Canada for a short time - likely due to eye infection. (Verified via handwritten copy of ship manifest and typed copy of St. Alban's List-Canadian Entry and Crossing- Germans from Russia Extraction) ----------------- Gottlieb Wegner was born Dec. 2, 1858 [son of Gottlieb Wegner & Louisa (Fischer) Wegner] On Nov. 21, 1880, Gottlieb married Christina Walter in the Evangelical church in, Kloestitz, Bessarabia, Russia. In 1902-3, they immigrated to the U.S. with all of their children, and upon arriving in North Dakota, Gottlieb Wegner's family first settle near Harvey, ND to work briefly on a farm for relatives by the name of Zweigle. They stayed there temporarily before homesteading northeast of Garrison, ND about 12 miles where they built a 8X10 sod house. After four years at that location (McLean County Twp.149N Range 82W - NE quarter of Section 34), they left before proving up their homestead, so had to pay $500 for it, which was entered as a cash sale in 1906. Gottlieb and Christina moved to a farm (rented)by Mannhaven for about 2 years and north of Stanton, ND (Mercer Co.). From there, about 1911, Gottlieb farmed 7 miles north of Beulah (near where the gas plant now is). (there may have been another farm he bought in that vacinity at a later date) In the fall of 1930, Gottlieb & Christina moved on to live with their son David and his wife Frieda on their farm northeast of Dodge, ND (Mercer Co., Township 146N 90W). Gottlieb helped farm there until his death in 1933 at the age of 75. He is mourned by his wife, ten children, three daughters and seven sons: Johann and David by Dodge ND; Friedrich by Hazen ND; Jakob by Sidney MT; Samuel by Lakesfield CA; Gottfried by Garrison ND; Katharina by Benedict ND and Sophie by McClusky; 52 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
