Burial will be in the Hickory Grove Cemetery rural Monmouth Iowa. Grace A. Shirk, one of ten children, was born on May 3, 1904 in Monmouth Iowa to Jacob Shirk and Cora (Scheib) Shirk. She was educated in Monmouth Schools. She married Norman McGaffee on November 28, 1923 in Maquoketa Iowa. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1974. Grace was a housewife and upon moving to California in the 1960's became a caregiver for many years eventually retiring and returning to Maquoketa in 1985. Grace was a member of the First Baptist Church in Maquoketa. She was a wonderful cook and was known by many for her lemon pies. She enjoyed needlepoint, making rugs, playing cards and parties. She was a family person and enjoyed her family and always tried to get the family together to spend time with each other. She had been an active resident of the Maquoketa Care Center since November 30, 2005. Grace is survived by: children- Norma (Ed) Smith of Maquoketa IA, Mary Bowman of Maquoketa IA, Bette Vasilik of Maquoketa IA, Jeanette McGaffee of CA, Wanda Pegorick of Wyoming IA, Ann (Neal) Miller of Maquoketa IA, Lewis McGaffee of CA, Virginia (Chuck) Hulen of CA, John (Simone) McGaffee of CA, Kay (Michael) Weiss of CA, Donald (Karen) McGaffee of CA, & Donna Edwards of CA; 22 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren & 6 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, 3 grandchildren, 4 sisters, 5 brothers, & 2 sons-in-law- Dean Bowman & Freddie Pegorick. The family would like to especially thank the staff at the Maquoketa Care Center for their wonderful care and support.
