Description	:	Grace Genearl Oswalt Moore passed away Sunday, April 27, at Morning Star Senior Retirement Facility in Billings. Grace was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Huxley, Shelby County, Texas, to Joseph Littleton “Lit” Oswalt and Martha Ida Metcalf Oswalt. She was the eighth child of 14 in the family including a set of twins who died shortly after birth. Grace was the only one of the Oswalt children to have a set of twins of her own. Grace was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Huxley, Shelby County, Texas, to Joseph Littleton “Lit” Oswalt and Martha Ida Metcalf Oswalt. She was the eighth child of 14 in the family including a set of twins who died shortly after birth. Grace was the only one of the Oswalt children to have a set of twins of her own. Grace grew up on the family farm in East Texas which produced watermelons, cantaloupes, sweet potatoes, peaches, pears, cotton, sugar cane and figs. One of her best memories was listening to her father “Lit” yodeling in the early morning on his way to do chores. She said you knew things were going well when you heard that yodel. She was blessed with a large southern family. Annual reunions every April could have up to 150 relatives converging on Huxley, Texas, at the Family Clubhouse, Land O’Goshen, for potluck meals, pit BBQ and lots of teasing and laughter. She attended Shelbyville High School and graduated in 1944 in a class of 30. She loved Home Economics, and her teacher Mrs. Seth was responsible for teaching her to match stripes and patterns. Grace was a gifted and generous seamstress for most of her life, sewing whatever was needed for friends and family. She was also responsible for crocheting afghans for children and grandchildren, quilting bedspreads, table runners and anything else we asked of her. Grace liked to be busy and was always working on a project for the Clancy Church they attended for years, working in her garden (or someone else’s), or sewing intricate pieces. Grace married John “Jack” Winfield Moore on Dec. 23, 1947. They lived almost all of their 66 years together in Helena, where they had a collection of wonderful friends, terrific neighbors and a good life. They had three children, John Douglas Moore of Helena, Jacquelyn Moore of Cedar Hill, Texas, and Carolyn Villa (David) of Billing;. four grandchildren, Amy Barber Ross (Earl) of Billings, Mitchell Barber (Monica) of Seattle, Montessa Depew of Spokane Wash., and Shane Moore of Helena; eight great-grandchildren, Ian and Kierney Ross, Samantha Moore, Warren, Fern and Garrett Depew, and Nathan and Audrey Barber. Not to mention numerous nieces and nephews too many to name individually. Grace worked outside of the home at the phone company as a newlywed and later with the State Board of Equalization, the Dept. of Revenue, and then the State of Montana Liquor Warehouse. She retired after 26 years working for the same division. Her retirement was spent caring for her beloved husband, Jack; gardening; sewing and traveling. Grace is preceded in death by four infant siblings, JL Oswalt Jr., Alma, and a set of twins; her mother, Martha Ida Metcalf; her father, Joseph Littleton Oswalt; older brother, Jimmy Aaron Oswalt; older sisters, Nannie Victoria Windham, Ruthie Mae Vaughn, Selma Marie Owens and Geneva Alvareta Wiedemann; and her husband, Jack Moore. She is survived by her sisters Bernice Lowell McGee, Wretha Ann Permenter, Clemmie Ruth Dean and her younger brother, Billy Burk Oswalt Windham. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at Cremation & Funeral Gallery on Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will follow the service at Morning Star, 4009 Bell Ave., in Billings Inurnment will be at a later date at the Veterans Cemetery at Fort Harrison, where Grace will be laid to rest next to her husband.
