Jack was born April 11, 1920, in Albion, Neb., to Claude Campbell Moore and Grace Bell Johnson Moore. He was the fourth child of 10 in the family. They moved to Bozeman, Mont., in 1924. Read More	John "Jack" Winfield Moore passed away Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, at Bonaventure Senior Retirement Facility in Billings. Jack was born April 11, 1920, in Albion, Neb., to Claude Campbell Moore and Grace Bell Johnson Moore. He was the fourth child of 10 in the family. They moved to Bozeman, Mont., in 1924. Jack has been a son, brother, sailor, soldier, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, friend and a patriot during his 93 years of life. He served in the Navy in the Pacific, serving under the Fleet Command of Bull Hallsey, on the USS Hailey DD 554 as a radar operator. Later, he served with the Army National Guard where he attained the rank of Command Sergeant Major, receiving recognition and respect until April of 1980 when he retired. He retired from his Civil Service position in June of 1978. Jack married Grace G. Moore on Dec. 23, 1947. They lived almost all of their 66 years together in Helena, Mont., where they had a collection of wonderful friends, terrific neighbors, and a good life. They had three children, John Douglas Moore of Helena, Jacquelyn Moore of Cedar Hill, Texas, and Carolyn Villa (David) of Billings; four grandchildren, Amy Barber Ross (Earl) of Billings, Mitchell Barber (Monica) of Seattle, Wash., Montessa Depew of Spokane, Wash., and Shane Moore of Helena; eight great-grandchildren, Ian and Kierney Ross, Samantha Moore, Warren, Fern and Garrett Depew, and Nathan and Audrey Barber. Jack's exceptional mechanical ability enabled him to fix just about anything, after first taking the time to ponder how best to proceed. He was adept at carpentry, electrical and plumbing. He loved horses and cars. People used to comment that he had more mechanical ability in his little finger than anyone else they knew. Those people must not have met his son, who takes after him in many ways. Jack had a sense of humor, which he credits to his mother, that never seemed to fail him. When serious questions were asked about preferences for the end of life, his comebacks were often instantaneous. When asked if he wanted to be cremated, he quickly stated that, "I'm not sure. I haven't tried it yet." Another time after attending the funeral of a man who was much younger and had worked for him decades before, he said, "By the time I die, there won't be anyone left to attend my funeral." Jack and Grace attended the Clancy Methodist Church for many years. However, due to logistics, a Celebration of Life will be held at Cremation & Funeral Gallery on Friday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. A gathering of family and friends will follow the service at Bonaventure, 4009 Bell Ave., in Billings. Inurnment at the veterans' cemetery in Helena will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the MS Foundation or the Montana Alzheimer's Association — research only, would be appreciated. The Lord our God took our husband and father softly, which was an answer to our prayers. Our family wishes to thank the staff of Bonaventure and the nurses from Rocky Mountain Hospice for their assistance, compassion and care. We are grateful to everyone for the kindness.
