Description	:	Grace (Piazzola) Helming, 79, passed away Saturday afternoon, Nov. 8, 2014, in a local hospital. She was born Feb. 24, 1935, to Pete and Agness (Moseley) Piazzola of Wise River. Her father, an Italian immigrant, was the Wise River District Forest Ranger and was transferred to Dillon soon after her birth. Read More	Grace (Piazzola) Helming, 79, passed away Saturday afternoon, Nov. 8, 2014, in a local hospital. She was born Feb. 24, 1935, to Pete and Agness (Moseley) Piazzola of Wise River. Her father, an Italian immigrant, was the Wise River District Forest Ranger and was transferred to Dillon soon after her birth. She attended Dillon schools and landed a job as a telephone operator at Mountain Bell during high school, an unusual accomplishment. She liked sharing humorous stories of the duties of a telephone operator in those days -- from taking grocery orders for the elderly to dispatching the police and fire departments. She graduated from Beaverhead County High School, Dillon, in 1953. She attended Missoula Business College and then worked various secretarial and clerk jobs for the Missoula Mercantile, Northern Pacific Railway, BLM and USFS. She married Bruce Helming on April 29, 1961, in Dillon, and began a life in Wisdom. Grace was always on the lookout for something to get involved in. She was very active in the local PTA while her sons were in school, and served many years as clerk of the Wisdom School Board and Wisdom Sewer District. When satellite television came to Wisdom, she became a devout fan of COSMOS and other scientific programs; something she continued to the end of her days. Grace’s grandparents were significant figures in the early mining history of Rochester, Melrose, Glendale, and Dewey. She began researching the history of that area, and published two books on the subject. In the process, she uncovered and published stories of numerous figures of that area, including George "Wild Man of Wise River" Pettingill, the Vipond Brothers, Henry Knippenberg, Professor Phillip Knabe, and "Sporting Lady turned Samaritan" Good Hearted Grinny. In the early 90s, Grace was honored by The Montana Historical Society for her work revealing that the namesake of Powell County was a local mountain man turned early-day sheriff of Dewey. Mont. Grace spent her last years visiting with locals and people who traveled through Wisdom, over coffee at the Antler Saloon. Her quick wit, engaging personality, and unique knowledge of area history made for great conversations; something for which she will be sorely missed. Her love for animals was notorious and her homemade confections tantalized many an area sweet tooth. At her request, no funeral services are planned. A luncheon to celebrate her life, will be announced at a later date -- after the long Big Hole winter. Memorials may be directed to Pintler Pets of Anaconda or the Wisdom Fire Dept.
