Description	:	Robert Bruce Helming, 82, passed away at his home Tuesday morning, May 22, 2012. He was born to Harry and Mary Woody Helming on June 2, 1929, and was a lifelong Wisdom resident: a distinction in which he took great pride. Read More	Robert Bruce Helming, 82, passed away at his home Tuesday morning, May 22, 2012. He was born to Harry and Mary Woody Helming on June 2, 1929, and was a lifelong Wisdom resident: a distinction in which he took great pride. He loved to tell stories of growing up in Wisdom during the Great Depression, stocking shelves at an early age at the Basin Mercantile and about life in a place where electricity and even 1930's conveniences were still years away. He graduated from Beaverhead County High School in 1947 and Montana State University-Missoula in business administration in 1951. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict but because he had typing and bookkeeping skills, was assigned to be a company clerk at an RAF base at England. His favorite stories while there were of playing piano at USO shows and of traveling throughout Europe. In 1953, he purchased the family business. Helming Brothers, Inc. was involved in many businesses at that time, Texaco bulk petroleum, GM autos, Ford tractors and manufacturing the "unique" Big Hole Beaverslide haying equipment. Many locals trace their mechanic ability to the old garage. He attended a GM School in Detroit, where he had the honor of meeting GM founders Alfred P. Sloan and Charles Kettering, saying that they laughed when he explained that the family dealership sold only four cars in a year! Bruce was very active in the Wisdom Community, as charter member of the Wisdom Rural Fire Department; clerk of session for the Church of the Big Hole; 50-year Past Master Wisdom Lodge AF&AM; and many years on the Wisdom Sewer District Board, Wisdom School Board, and American Legion and VFW posts. He was also very active in business development groups, Magic Land, Montana Gold West Territory, and the Intercounty Development Corp., which transformed Gregson Hot Springs into Fairmont. His love of playing cards with the locals and especially his great friend, Earl Willey, was legendary. If there are cards in Heaven — that's what he's doing! He started several recreation fads around the area, kindling an interest in volleyball, golf and cross country skiing in area people. He loved most taking weekly hikes with his boys and starting an argument between them so that they would bicker instead of complaining about the length of the hike! Bruce married Grace Piazzola on April 29, 1961, in Dillon, and she survives. Also surviving are sons, Gary (Cecelia) Helming of Butte and Jay (Sue) Helming of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Andrew and Kate Helming of Butte, Jordan (Lura Lynn) Helming of Vermillion, S.D.; and Alyssa Helming of Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Floy Helming; and cousin and adopted sister, Anna Lee Baker, as well as numerous aunts and uncles and cousins. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 29, at the Church of the Big Hole in Wisdom. Memorials are suggested to the Wisdom Fire Dept or Church of the Big Hole.
