Reverend Timothy Pratt and Reverend Robert Hopkins will officiate with burial in the Jelen Cemetery in rural Verdigre. Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Verdigre. Brockhaus Funeral Home in Verdigre is in charge of arrangements. Grace Rose Elis Jerman, along with a twin-brother Glen, was born on August 30, 1921 to Adolph and Thresa Dobrichousky Elis at Pishelville Ne. She passed away April 23, 2011 at Alpine Village in Verdigre at the age of 89. Grace and her twin brother Glen and sisters Leona and Wilma grew up on the family farm west of Pishelville and attended school district # 46. Grace was a good scholar but because their family lived so far away from a town none of the children were able to attend high school. After Grace graduated from the eighth grade she worked for other families, serving as housekeeper, babysitter, and chore girl all for the grand wage of fifty cents a day. Eventually she took employment working at the White Corner Bakery and Café while boarding in Verdigre. The Elis family was very fond of music and dancing. It was at a dance, that Grace caught the eye of the handsome young drummer by the name of Joe Jerman, whom she married on Nov 19, 1941 at O'Neill, Ne. Four children were born to this union. The young Jermans lived on the family farm northwest of Verdigre, where they worked together tilling the land and caring for livestock. In the spring of 1968, Joe suffered a severe stroke which left him physically handicapped. Grace suddenly found herself in the roll of farm manager and caregiver while Joe struggled to overcome his disabilities. Following Joe's recovery, they moved to a nearby farmstead and were able to continue with the farm work but did spend more time doing things they enjoyed together such a traveling, being active with Joe's hobby of playing drum and becoming grandparents. During this time, Grace did train and work as a nursing assistant which gave her great satisfaction as her childhood dream was to be a nurse. After Joe died very unexpectedly in 1979, Grace moved to Verdigre. She took great pride in her yard and flowers, was active in a number of community organizations, volunteered at Alpine Village and attended activities that her Verdigre and Clarkson grandchildren took part in. Grace's favorite thing to do was to cook meals for family and friends and bake, especially Kolaches. Grace organized Kolache Baking for the Methodist Church for many years and even won a Kolache Baking contest in 2001. Many people in the area have enjoyed delicious food from "Gracies Kitchen". There was never a time that Grandma Grace's bread box did not have a homemade treat waiting for a grandchild or friend to stop by. When Grace knew she could no longer maintain her yard and home independently, she choose to move to the Czech Alps apartments where she remained active in the community. In 2007, as her physical condition declined she elected to move to the Alpine Village Assisted Living. In the fall of 2009, she became a resident of Alpine Village Retirement Center. Grace had a very independent nature when it came to caring for herself, she also had the gift of being able to make the best of her situation wherever she was residing. Survivors include Jan (Don) Vrbicky of Clarkson and Penny (Ron) Walton of Verdigre; grandchildren Lindsy (Brad) Schwartz, Shawn Vrbicky and fiancé Drew Schultz, Joe Vrbicky, Todd (Susan) Walton, Paula (Rory) Hoffman and Janel Walton; great-grandchildren Garrett Schwartz, Grace, Jaxson and Weston Hoffman and Stephanie and Jason Walton: one sister Leona Vesely; and nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband Joe; her parents; infant sons Gary and Joseph; brother Clarence and twin brother Glen; sister and spouse Wilma and Jim Nachtman; and brother-in-law Otto Vesely.
