He was born June 28, 1917 in Surry County, NC to the late General Silas and Cora Johnson Sechrist. Mr. Sechrist was an Army Veteran having served during WWII. Survivors include his wife, Alma Chappell Sechrist of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Frances and husband, Robert Richardson of Mt. Airy, NC, Carolyn and husband, Donnie Goad of Winston-Salem, NC, Nancy and husband, Donald Bryant of Woodlawn, Audrey and husband, Michael Mills of Mt. Airy, NC, Barbara and husband, Bobby Bullins of Mt Airy, NC and Mary Ann Smith & Bobby Smith both of Cana; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and wife, Judy Sechrist of Mt Airy, NC, Ralph and wife, Beverly Sechrist of Rockwell, NC, Charles and wife, Laura Sechrist of Martinsville, Tim Sechrist and Amanda Tate both of Mt. Airy, NC, Gary and wife, Kim Sechrist of Cana, and Jonathan and wife, Kathy Sechrist of Westfield, NC; forty-two grandchildren; sixty-one great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Ernie and husband, Wade Bowman of Cana; brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy and wife, Ona Mae Sechrist of Cana, and Paul and wife, Peggy Sechrist of Cana; daughter-in-law, Diane Sechrist of Pilot Mountain, NC; brother-in-law, Jim Chappell of Cana, and sister-in-law, Phyllis and husband, Lois Gwynn of Las Vegas, NV. In addition to his parents, Mr. Sechrist was preceded in death by one grandchild, Melissa Bullins, several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Funeral services was held on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church of Mount Airy, NC conducted by Rev. Randy Edwards. Interment followed in Epworth United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the V.F.W. Memorial Honor Guard Post# 2019 of Mount Airy, NC and Post# 9436 of Pilot Mountain, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Alma Sechrist, 472 Splitrail Road, Cana, VA 24317, in honor of Grady Sechrist's military service in WWII. Online condolences may be made at www.howellfuneralservices.com. Howell Funeral Services of Mount Airy, NC was in charge of the arrangements.
