The funeral service will be held on Friday, March 27 at 10:00 AM at Peace Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Michael Klatt and Rev. Cory Burma officiating. Interment will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, rural Columbus. Visitation will be on Thursday from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Friday from 9:00 AM until service time at the church. Gretchen Fay Wilke Schroeder was born December 6, 1939, in Columbus, Nebraska, to Gottlieb and Ruth (Kuehnert) Wilke the youngest of seven children, often being referred to as little “GF”. She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church. Gretchen attended Christ Lutheran Grade School and graduated in 1957 from Kramer High School in Columbus. Prior to her marriage, Gretchen worked as a secretary for George Ewert Auto, and Behlen Manufacturing. On August 27, 1961, Gretchen was united in marriage to Billy D. Schroeder at Christ Lutheran Church. Gretchen continued to work at Behlen Manufacturing until they started their family, at which time she stayed home to be a homemaker raising their children Heidi Marie and Barbara Ruth. Gretchen and Bill farmed together, raising corn, beans, alfalfa and wheat. They also raised chickens, ducks, geese, pheasants, cattle and hogs. Gretchen was known for her huge garden, beautiful flowers and yard, canning several varieties of vegetables and fruit, she also loved to bake, cook and sew. All of which she always enjoyed sharing with her family and friends. The grandchildren always received a special baked good when they were all together. She was known to sew a dress in an evening, making several items of clothing for her girls. She passed all her passions in life on to her family. As a youth, Gretchen was a member of Walther League. After marriage she belonged to Farmers Daughters Extension Club, and the Coyote Club. Gretchen was a member of Peace Lutheran Church where she was active in the church choir, taught Vacation Bible School, enjoying Second Milers couples club, and various church lady’s groups. She enjoyed music, antiques, dancing, hunting, trapping, attending her grandchildren’s activities, and playing cards and board games. The family could always count on her to play a competitive game of Sequence with her grandchildren. She never knew a stranger, especially enjoyed visiting and always put others needs before her own. She was a very strong believer in God as Faith, family and hard work is how she raised her family. Gretchen never said “good bye”, she always said “see you later”.
