Gudrun was from a devout Christian family. She was born Nov. 16, 1918, at Ranger, N.D., daughter of Sivert and Martha Vanvig. who had emigrated from Norway and homesteaded in Slope County in western North Dakota. Gudrun was from a devout Christian family. She was born Nov. 16, 1918, at Ranger, N.D., daughter of Sivert and Martha Vanvig. who had emigrated from Norway and homesteaded in Slope County in western North Dakota. She attended a one-room grade school in the Golva, N.D., area and graduated from Beach High School in 1935. She taught in grade schools in western North Dakota and eastern Montana prior to attending Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn., for one year and subsequently graduating from the University of Montana in Missoula with a bachelor's degree in education. Gudrun married Robert Hensley on June 24, 1951. She taught commercial subjects — typing, shorthand and bookkeeping — in the Townsend high school for many years. She was highly regarded as an excellent teacher and firm disciplinarian. There are senior citizens, middle-aged people and young people alike who have all benefited from her teaching. Gudrun was a devoted wife and wonderful homemaker who enjoyed helping her husband in his life's work as a farmer. She and Bob's mother often baked homemade meals and took them to the field for the workers. Always a cheerful and energetic person, she enjoyed visiting with relatives and friends, sewing, gardening and playing bridge. She enjoyed taking rides through the countryside with her sisters-in-law so that they had time to visit. Gudrun was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Thomas and Lester; and two sisters, Solveig (Sally) and Minnie. She is survived by her husband, Bob; her brother Andrew (Connie) Vanvig of Beach, N.D.; and nieces and nephews, Karen (Ron) Rasmussen, Minneapolis, Kirby (Donalee) Josephson, Redwood Falls, Minn., Randi (Neil) Feil, Pewaukee, Wis., Marnie (Kenton) Carlson, Bismarck, N.D., John (Jane) Vanvig, Silver City, N.M., Sandra (Bruce) Stowe, Port Townsend, Wash., James (Rene) Vanvig, Cleveland, Elizabeth (Kevin) Thorie, Boyceville, Wis., Greg Haugen, Mark (Nancy) Haugen, Todd (Danelle) Haugen, all of Bemidji, Minn., Sue (Tom) Ellenbecker, Rochester, Minn., Ann (Jeff) Compton, Grand Forks, N.D.; and numerous great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Gudrun's name to the Townsend Food Share or a charity of the donor's choice. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 21, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, Townsend. Graveside committal will follow at Deep Creek Cemetery. Connors Funeral Home assisted the family with the services.
