Funeral Services For Ex-Councilman Were Held Monday Gus F. Paulsen, 73, former Monticello Councilman died suddenly at his home last Friday night at 9 o'clock. Although he had been confined to his bed for a few days his death came as a shock to his family and friends. He had been in failing health since spring although his many friends were unaware of the fact that he was seriously ill. Born in Germany Mr.Paulsen was born in Hiede Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, Sept. 23, 1863 and came to America with his father in the spring of 1880. He settles in Bryan, Clinton County where an uncle had already located. In 1883 he came to Center Junction. He married Gesina Leesekamp Nov 30 , 1886 and last fall the observed their fiftieth anniversary at the Monticello country club. Ninety seven friends and relatives including their seven children were present to honor Mr. and Mrs. Paulsen. Farmer Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Paulsen lived for a year and a half near Center Junction. They then lived in Scotch Grove a year before moving to Smithtown where Mr. Paulsen operated a creamery for three years. The family lived on a number of farms near Oxford Junction and Wyoming before finally buying a farm north of Monticello on the Jones and Delaware county line. In 1918 they moved to Monticello where they had lived since. Councilman Mr. Paulsen was councilman from Monticello's Third Ward for one term 1932-34. He was actively engaged in community affairs and in all church activities. He was a member of the Reformed church and served in many of the executive offices of the church. his passing will be sadly marked by his friends, his wife and children to whom he was devoted Besides his widow, he is survived by the following children. Mrs. Martin Burrichter, Jacob Paulsen, Mrs. Gesina Behrends, Henry Paulsen, Mrs. Louise Etten, Mrs. August Husman, all of Monticello, and Mrs. Viola Zumbach of Coggon. In addition there are 26 grandchildren.
