(Special) - Guy Walker (sic) Colton, son of H. Porter and Lavana E. Colton was born in Freeport, Stephenson county, Ill., April 13, 1858 and died at his home in Cincinnati, Ia. Feb. 15, 1932 aged 73 years 10 months and 2 days. He was of genuine American ancestory, his parents having come from Vermont prior to the Civil war. His early boyhood was spent in Freeport, Illinois, and Stoughton, Wisconsin. He came to Iowa when he was about twelve years of age. He attended High School at Adel in Dallas county. The family moved to Davis county and there he married Susanna Kinman, Mar. 31, 1878, and those two lived together up to the golden period of half a century and beyond. To this union eight children were born. Three died in infancy and Mrs. Zella Graham in September 1928. He is survived by his widow, three daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. Zoe Shook, of Des Moines, Iowa, Mrs. Maude Musgrave, of Hollywood, California, and Mrs. Daisy Fry of Sioux City. His son, Porter, lives in Vancourver, British Columbia. He also leaves one sister Mrs. Clara Morgan of Cincinnati and three grandchildren, Mrs. Louise Moore, Mrs. Marietta Hockersmith and Miss June Colton. Mr. Colton came to Cincinnati many years ago about the time of the opening of the old Appanoose mine in which his father was interested, and has lived here ever since. He was quiet and unobtrusive and never pushed himself forward, but his fellow citizens recognized his merits and twice elected him mayor and many times Justice of the Peace. For some time he was superintendent of the city schools, and later became bookkeeper for the Ketchem company and other concerns. He was long a faithful member of the Congregational church. He was a member of the Odd Fellow lodge but was especially interested in Masonry. He was made a Mason in Sincerity Lodge at Moulton two years before there was a lodge in Cincinnati, being initiated Dec. 30, 1887, passed January 27, 1888, and raised Feb. 24, 1888. He was very active in having a lodge formed in Cincinnati and when Prosperity Lodge was established here, he was one of the Charter Members. The funeral service was held in Cincinnati, Wednesday, Feb. 17, conducted by The Rev. Mott R. Sawyers of Centerville, the members of Prosperity Lodge conducting their Masonic ritual.
