When she was about 9 years of age her parents moved to Iowa locating in Davis county, where for several years she lived on a farm near Bloomfield. Her father was a minister of the Baptist faith and early in life she declared her allegiance to Christ and united with that church. On the last day of March, 1878, she was married to Guy W. Colton and began those wedded years which absorbed the remainder of her days. For almost 54 years those two journeyed life's highway hand in hand. Her home was a throne and when that throne was broken by the death of her companion, her interest in life was gone and within five days she followed him to the grave. As the Scripture says of Saul and Jonathan these two "were lovely and pleasant in their lives and in their deaths they were not divided." And we may hope that the ties broken here were quickly united there to remain forever. The Colton's came to Cincinnati many years ago, Porter Colton, the sturdy and respected village blacksmith was active in opening up this coal field. When the original "Appanoose" mine was opened he purchased an interest in it for himself and his son Guy. Guy then moved here from Davis county. From that day to but a few years ago their home occupied a goodly place in the community life. Their house was not left unto them desolate but one by one eight children came trooping in. Of those eight, four preceded the mother in death, three dying in infancy and Mrs. Zella Graham in Sept. 1929. Three daughters and one son still remain. The daughters are Mrs. Zoe Shook of Des Moines, Mrs. Maude Musgraves of Hollywood, California, and Mrs. Daisy Fry of Sioux City. The son, Porter, lives in Vancourver, British Columbia. There are also three grandchildren, Mrs. Louise Moore, Mrs. Marietta Hockersmith and Miss June Colton. She also leaves two brothers, T. O. and Nathan Kinman of Davis county, and one brother James and one sister, Alzina, living in Oregon. April 1st, 1888, she with her husband united with the Congretational church of Cincinnati and remained faithful members of that organization as long as they lived. She was a home loving woman and greatly respected in all the Cincinnati vicinity. The funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church in Cincinnati by the Rev. Mott R. Sawyers, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Centerville and her remains were laid by the side of her husband in the west cemetery.
