He passed away Wednesday morning, March 5, at Brooklyn, New York. Guy grew to manhood in Wahoo and after he left here he joined the Marines in which he served for many years. He returned to this community at least once a year to visit with his old friends and his mother. The body is being sent to Wahoo and Hult Mortuary will have charge of the arrangements. GUY SMITH, 57, FORMER RESIDENT HERE DIED IN BROOKLYN, Wahoo Wasp 3-13-1947 Guy William Smith, son of Charles and Leticia Smith was born July 27, 1890 at Wahoo, NE and passed away march 5, 1947 at the age of 57 years, 7 months, and 8 days. His parents, two brothers, and one sister preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his passing two sisters, Mrs Nettie Dayton, Tillamook, OR, and Mrs. Mable Keen of Abilene KS; six nephews and two nieces besides many relatives and friends. His boyhood days were spent in Wahoo where he attended school. At an early age he enlisted in the United States Marines and served until the close of the First World War. While in the Marines he studied electrical engineering and completed the course after entering civilian life. On completion of this course he was employed by the General Electric Company as a supervisor for a number of years. He resigned this position in the fall of 1939 to again enter the services of "Uncle Sam". He was assigned to the engineering department at the shipyards in Brooklyn, New York. When the second war began he was in charge of a Diesel Engineering group whose duty it was to visit the various radar stations in the North Atlantic and repair and service them. At the close of the war he returned to the office of the shipyards. This strenuous war work in severe weather had so impaired his health that in June 1946 he suffered a stroke from which he never fully recovered. His mother was especially dear to him and in the last years of her life he did everything in his power to make her comfortable and happy. Guy or "Bun" as his close friends called him, had a quiet and unassuming disposition. He was a true and devoted friend and it was his delight to do for others. He was loved by all who knew him well. He was a faithful member of the "Old Glory" naval Post of the American Legion Post 488, Brooklyn , New York, James B. Schultz, Legion Commander. His Legion comrades did everything possible to make his last days happy, but were not able to stay the hand of death. He always spoke of Wahoo as his home and it was his greatest desire to return home to spend his remaining days. Funeral services were held at the L. E. Hult funeral Home, March 10, 1947, with interment in Sunrise Cemetery at Wahoo. The music was furnished by Danny Lapour and Mrs. Alice Prokop, services were conducted by Rev. L. R. Davis. There firing squad of the Wahoo Post 82 of the Legion paid final tribute to this Legion Comrade.
