He was born the son of Charles Isaac and Vera (Boltz) Ammons on April 1, 1924 in Lacoochee, FL. Hal graduated from high school in 1942 in Brandon, FL. Ammons, 81, of Gorin, MO passed away February 28, 2006 at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis. He was born the son of Charles Isaac and Vera (Boltz) Ammons on April 1, 1924 in Lacoochee, FL. Hal graduated from high school in 1942 in Brandon, FL. He joined the United States Army following graduation and served in the European Theater in World War II. He attained the rank of corporal and was a radio operator. Although never seriously injured in combat, he did survive many close calls. When he was discharged from the service in 1945, he entered the University of Tampa. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with a minor in Sociology. When asked why he did not major in agriculture, Hal responded that he already knew how to farm. Hal married the former Susan McIntosh on June 12, 1948 at the University of Tampa. They shared 57 years together. The Ammons moved to the family farm in Gorin following graduation. Since his time in the service, Hal had always had an affinity for HAM Radios. He attained the highest ranking possible for a HAM Radio operator. Among his many interests, Hal was an avid photographer. He was a long time member of the Shutterbug Club and often exhibited his work at the Scotland County Fair. He also had an extensive telegraph key collection. Hal and Susan enjoyed taking long trips and going to the auction in Gorin. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Susan, of the home; his daughter, Carol Lee Ammons of Edina; a son, Charles Wesley Ammons of Columbia; many cousins and a host of friends. Funeral services are were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 2, 2006 at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with the Rev. Ernest Deatrick officiating. Providing special music were Joan Hinds, organist, and Angela Westhoff and Elaine Forrester, vocalists. Serving as pallbearers were Paul Tague, Bob Hunolt, Kevin Gordy, David Tague, Eddie Tague, and Bruce Tague. Burial was in the Gorin Cemetery, Gorin, MO. Memorials have been suggested to the family and can be left at or mailed to the Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main St., Memphis, MO 63555. Condolences may be sent to the Ammons' family via email at [email protected] Arrangements were under the direction of the Gerth Funeral Service from their Memphis chapel.
