Although she was diagnosed with multiple myloma and congestive heart failure, with treatment, Hannah enjoyed many active years with the cancer in remission. She attained the age of 92 years, 6 months and 20 days. Officiating during the service will be the Rev. Sarah Hagena. Judy Rops will be organist. Cheryl Hagena will be the soloist. Hannah (Johanna) Bruns was born May 14, 1913 on a farm near Wellsburg, IA. She was the first child of Henry and Jennie (Kuper) Bruns. While Hannah was still a toddler, the family moved to a farm south of Lennox, SD. Lennox would become her permanent residence and much loved hometown. Upon graduation from country school, Hannah worked at the family business, farming. As a successful farmer, Henry Bruns would at times hire extra help. One of those hired hands was Eddie Smidt. Hannah and Eddie were married Jan. 25, 1933. The couple farmed a quarter section five miles south of Lennox and ultimately expanded their operation by purchasing another 80-acre farm three miles south of Lennox. There, they eventually built a new home and enjoyed semi-retirement. Several years after Eddie's death Hannah moved to a residence at 213 S. Cherry Street in Lennox. Her parents and infant sister preceded her in death as well as her husband in 1980, her sister Irene Goeman in 1954, her brother Harm Bruns in 1996, and her sister Doris Jibben in 2005. Hannah was a member of Turner County First Presbyterian Church, the United Presbyterian Women's organization and the Lennox Senior Citizen's Center. She was a recipient of the RSVP Lincoln County Volunteer Award and especially enjoyed the Senior Citizen's Center where she would quilt everyday until illness prevented her from doing so. Hannah will be remembered for her home-made bread and chocolate angel food cake, her quilts, her generosity, her empathy, her doughnuts and pies, her concern for others, her insistence upon a neat and weed free yard, and her love. Hannah is survived by her son, Ray Smidt, and his wife, Carol of Sioux Falls; her granddaughter, Cathy, and her husband Kevin Vermillion of Sioux Falls; her grandson, Mark Smidt, and his wife Jo Ann of Lennox; her brother, John D. Bruns and his wife Sylvia; her sisters-in-law, Dena Bruns and Gladys Smidt, all of Lennox and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and beloved friends.
