Lois Royce, the school teacher in Plainview, Nebraska, found herself trapped with three of her students in the schoolhouse. By 3 p.m. they had run out of heating fuel. Her boarding house was only 82 yards away so she attempted to lead the children there. Because visibility was so poor they became lost and the children, two nine year old boys and a seven year old girl, froze to death. Lois survived but her feet were frost bitten and had to be amputated. Peter Poggensee was the other boy who died in the blizzard. Lois erected gravestones for her students who died in the blizzard in the cemeteries where they were buried. This blizzard was know as the Schoolhouse Blizzard of 1888.
