Read More	Cedar Rapids Evening Gazette & Republican Wednesday December 19, 1928 Marion News Funeral services were held in Marion Monday for Mrs. John Walser who died at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Robins, in Long Beach, Calif., Dec. 6. She had lived in the home of her daughter the last twenty-four years. She moved with them to California eleven years ago. As Hannah Metcalf she was born near Ashland, O., April 5, 1834, making her at the time of her death ninety-four years old. She moved west with her parents and two sisters and five brothers in 1852, making the trip in a caravan. It was a three-months journey. They made their first stop at Marion, then only a small village. The father took a homestead three miles northwest of Marion on what is now known as the John Walser farm. She was married to John Walser just one month after their arrival in Marion on Nov. 16, 1852. The ceremony was performed by Squire Gageby on the farm southeast of Marion, now owned by George Munier. A few days after the wedding she and her husband moved to Independence, going by ox team. There was deep snow on the ground and it took several days to make the trip. In the following spring they moved back to her father's farm where they lived for sixty years. Mrs. Walser and her husband endured many hardships. White neighbors were few and scattering, but Indians were numerous. In spite of her advanced age, she loved to mingle with other people and attended church and Sunday school almost every Sunday. She had been a Christian most of her life and was a member of the Presbyterian church in Marion. A funeral service was conducted by her pastor, the Rev. John Oliver in Long Beach on Dec. 8. The service Monday at the Yocom funeral home in Marion, was by the Rev. W.E. Fisher.
