"Dear Sir - I will inform you that my mother is sick and she thinks it is her last sickness - she thinks she is very much as your father was - she has had Dr Perkins to see her. She was taken with a cold about three weeks ago and greatest difficulty with her she has no appetite and short breath and seems to be filling up. She gets up every day and can walk from the bed to the fire but she of course grows weaker. She has her reason and can tell about old folks and old times as well as ever but we think she can not get along but a little while if she does not have an appetite. She says your father lived so six weeks. I think she is the oldest person in town and Mr Samuel Vaughn has lately died that she is discouraged but I tell her she may get over this and live to be one hundred. Mother was 91 and three days of this month and perhaps there is not a person in the state say three weeks ago that can see hear and reason better than she could and she not much infirmed although she is weak." The letter adds more about the fact she is the great grand daughter of the William Shurtleff killed by lightning in Marshfield, and how he wanted to know the year of William's immigration and death.
