"Aunt Susie, as she was called in her advanced years, was a noted person throughout a locality much broader than the town in which she was born, and where living to extreme age,she died. She was a native of that part of town of Plympton that is now Carver and was born in the last year before the change from the old style of calendar. She was a favorite, bright, interesting child, who at maturity became a young lady of charming beauty, with the most agreeable social and intellectual qualities; but in the morning of her glory a dire calamity befell her. A change came over the young woman as silent as the midnight thief, more cruel than the grave. She became extremely excitable, restless, wakeful and eccentric. There was mental aberration, and she portrayed permanent delusions during the rest of her life, but never have been dangerous at large, she was never restrained of liberty. There is a tradition that the struggle of the seven years' Revolutionary War gave intense anxiety and distress to Aunt Susie, that culminated in a degree of aberration. It is more than probable that the terrible disaster that befell the ill-fated armed brig, General Arnold, at Plymouth December 1779, in the darkest days of the Revolution, made a life long impression upon the unfortunate young lady's mind. The howling of the fierce winter storms overwhelmed her with grief as she contemplated the peril of the unfortunate sailor. She believed in the existence of witches or evil spirits, and that they came to molest her in the night; but she had a perfect way of repelling them, which was to scrape the chimney occasionally with an iron bar. The old brick chimney still shows the defacement and wear from the scraping of the witch-repelling iron bar. Her chair was very low and made of maple; the seat was made of meadow flag, which she skillfully constructed and replaced whenever necessary. It was called Aunt Susie's chair, which no one else ever pretended to use. There were two other chairs in the house she would never use. They formerly belonged to a poor, unfortunate homicide who became a life inmate of the Worcester Insane Asylum. Aside from several harmless delusions (she believes herself to be the sole owner of the Shurtleff homestead) Aunt Susie's mind was clear, strong and well poised. She took much exercise which gave her a good appetite. She used to card wool into rolls then spun it into yarn. She had a garden and a tobacco patch, her diet was simple and plain. She was ill but a few days, we all felt sad, and she passed away as calmly as the weary child falls asleep in her mother's arms. She died with capillary bronchitis, a fatal disease in very old people. The inevitable hour came just as the evening shade was passing over the close of 1842."
