He was born in Denmark in 1853. When a boy he was apprenticed to a miller and worked in a flouring mill three years. When twenty-one years of age he entered the military service, as is the custom of his country, and served one year. In 1882, he left his native land to find a home in Kansas. He came direct to this state and bought the original homestead of Moses Louthan, on Third creek. The land was under a fair state of improvement, but he built a substantial stone residence of six rooms the same year. In 1895, he built an excellent barn thirty-four feet square. This farm of two hundred and twenty-two acres is an exceptionally good one, well watered and well timbered. Mr. Asmussen was married, in 1883, to Mary Hansen, a sister of Mrs. Fred Beck. Their family consists of four boys and one daughter. Chris, a young man of seventeen years, assists with the work on the farm; Henry, Anna Maria, Jens Peter, and Carl, are aged fifteen, thirteen, eleven and nine years respectively. --- OBITUARY One of Simpson's best beloved and respected citizens, answered the final call Wednesday about one o'clock February 23, 1939. Hans Christian Asmussen was born April 5, 1853, across the sea at North Slevig, Denmark, and died in Simpson, KS, USA at the age of 85 years, 10 months and 18 days. Mr. Asmussen has always enjoyed good health until the last six weeks of his life. He was the youngest of a family of 5 children, 4 boys and 1 girl. They all preceded him in death. Mr. Asmussen and Misses Maren and Elizabeth Hansen were in a party of immigrants to this country in 1882. On March 25, 1883, Mr. Asmussen and Miss Maren Hansen were united in marriage and settled on their farm south of Simpson where they lived happily until her death August 5, 1917. To this union seven children were born, five of whom survive the deceased: Chris Asmussen of Denver, CO., Henry Asmussen of Leoti, KS, Miss Anna of the home, Jens and Carl Asmussen of Simpson. Six grand children and three great grand children and a host of relatives and friends mourn his death. Early in life he became a member of the Lutheran church in his native land and remained faithful to the church until his death. Five years after the death of Mrs. Asmussen, Mr. Asmussen and daughter, Anna, moved to their home in Simpson where they have lived since. Anna has been a devoted companion and caretaker of her father since her mother's death, not sparing time nor labor, in his service. Mr. Asmussen was a devoted husband, a kind and loving father, a good neighbor, always willing and ready to assist anyone in time of need. He was especially fond of little children and was a pal to all little children in the neighborhood. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Glasco with Rev. George L. Search, former paster, officiating. He paid high tribute to the exemplary life of this noble pioneer and true Christian gentleman. Lott & Stine were the morticians. Burial was made in the family plot in the Glasco Cemetery. ---
