Read More	From the History of the Martens Clan: "Hans F. Martens, the oldest, was born August 29, 1825, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was but nine years old when his father passed away. His father, at the time, owned a few acres of land and since his mother was too poor to hire help, it was necessary that Hans F. carry on with the work. When about twenty years old, he was drafted to serve in the army as was customary in that country at that time. He served three years. About the time he had finished his term, Schleswig-Holstein rebelled against the Danish rule, under whose jurisdiction they were, and Hans F. took up arms and suffered the hardships of war for three long years (1848-1851). When the war ended, he was honorably discharged and once more took up farming and other labor. In 1852, he was married to Katherine Magdelena Bahr and to this union six children were born. They were Hans Friederich, Margaretta, Anna, Detlef, Johanna, and one that did not survive infancy. In 1869 his wife died. In 1871 he married Anna Hinz; to this union one son, Peter Herman, was born. In the spring of 1883, he followed his two brothers, one son, and two daughters to the good old United States, where milk and honey were supposed to flow. He left Hamburg, Germany, with the rest of his family on April 19, landing in New York on May 5. After a short visit with his brother, Fred, near Des Moines, Iowa, he came on to Cass county, where his children resided near Atlantic, Iowa. After making his home with his children for several years, he decided to take up farming once more, and in the spring of 1887, he began farming in Cass county, staying on the same place until his death on July 27, 1904." Semi-Weekly Telegraph, Atlantic, Iowa, obituary: "Died at his home in Noble township after a lingering illness, Hans Frederick Martens. Mr. Martens was born in Bollersdorf, Schleswig, Holstein on Aug. 21, 1835 and died July 27, 1906, was buried July 29. Six stalwart gransons acted as pall bearers. Interment in the Weirich cemetery. Rev. Hanssler of the German Lutheran church conducted the ceremony. Mr. Martens was for four years a soldier, three of them spent on fields of battle durring the wars of his native country waged to gain its independence. He was decorated with the iron cross for conspicuous bravery in front of the enemy. He leaves a wife and six children, they are Fred, Detlef, Herman and Mrs. Henry Sothmann of Noble township, Mrs. Mark Hansen of Grove township and Mrs. Otto Wilken of Atlantic. In the death of Mr. Martens there has passed one of the noblest men that ever lived."
