Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, March 25, at 2:00 o'clock at the Lutheran church preceded by a short service at the Setbacken home at 1:30 o'clock for H. J. Setbacken who passed away at his home March 21, at the age of 90 years and 17 days. Hans J. Setbacken was born in Oslo, Norway, one of nine children, to Jens and Lise Setbacken, all of whom have preceded him in death. When he was nine years of age, he came with his family to the United States and settled at MacGregor, Iowa, moving from there to Whalen, Minnesota, where he grew to young manhood and was married to Isabel Hauskey of Whalen, Minnesota on May 14, 1879. To this union was born seven children: Julia, Adolph, Elizabeth, Jens, Helmer, Anna and Edith. One son, Adolph, preceded him in death at age 27 years. Mr. and Mrs. Setbacken came to this part of the country in the year 1880, homesteading on a claim about 5 miles northeast of LP. They moved to the city of LP where he was engaged in the real estate business. In recent years most of his time has been spent looking after his many farming interests and town properties. As an old pioneer many memorable incidents were recalled by Mr. Setbacken, including the hard winter of 1880-1881, when the railroads were blocked and no fuel or food could be shipped in, the pioneers had to burn twisted hay to keep warm and grind the grain in a coffee mill to keep soul and body together. He also recalled the blizzard of January 12, 1888, and the drought of the early 90's but in spite of these hard times there was joy in the thought of conquering the elements and withstanding the hardships and he rejoiced exceedingly in these cherished memories. Mr. Setbacken was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church from which his faith had never waivered. He is survived by his wife, Isabel, and children, Mrs. Julia Farnes, Mrs. J. A. Sorensen, and Helmer Setbacken of LP, Mrs. C. E. West, and Mrs. E. B. Stone of Minneapolis, fifteen grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. The remains were laid to rest in the LP cemetery west of our city. The pall-bearers were six of Mr. Setbacken's grandsons: Herbert Farnes, Roger and Bruce Stone, Howard Carlson, Don Menzel and Virgil W. Neal. Out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Stone, Mr. and Mrs. Roger Stone, Bruce Stone, Mrs. C. E. West, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil W. Neal, Mlps, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Farnes of Franklin, MN; Mr. and Mrs. Henry Johnson of Estelline, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Ed Torgrud of Huron, SD; Mr. and Mrs. Helmer Torgrud of Arlington; Anna Farnes of Hetland; Mr. and Mrs. Art Hagen of Brookings.
