Lester Johnson is building a new home near the Hans Nielsen house and during the last few days Mr. Nielsen had been helping them to put on the laths to pass away the time. Friday noon he ate a hardy dinner, feeling as well as ever, after which he went back to the Johnson house. A few minutes after he started to work, one of the Johnson boys who was in an adjoining room, heard something fall on the floor and when he looked in he saw Mr. Nielsen laying on the floor breathing his last. The alarm was given at once, but Mr. Nielsen was dead before help came. When he was taken up from the floor he had his knife in one hand and a lath in the other, which he had partly trimmed with his knife to fit in a corner. Hans Nielsen was born May 2, 1843 in Vanthore, near Nysted, Lolland, Denmark. He came to the United States on May 16 1869. In June 1872 he came to Dannebrog and in partnership with Carl L.Petersen, started a general store which they operated for twelve years, selling out and closing that business in June 1884 and moving onto both their farms a few miles north-east of Dannebrog where they lived as neighbors for several years. The intimate friendship of the two still existed at the time of Mr. Nielsen's death. April 21, 1883 Mr. Nielsen was married to Miss Marie Eugenia Sundstrom. To this union were born thirteen children, seven sons and six daughters of which three sons have died; Ralph and Marinus and one that died in infancy. All the remaining ten but two are living in Howard County, near or in Dannebrog. Mr. Nielsen, wife and youngest children left the farm and moved to Dannebrog last fall and he died here Friday May 7 1920 at the age of 77 years and 5 days, leaving to mourn his loss; his wife, ten children; Mrs. Emil Frandsen of Hay Springs, Nebr., Mrs. Fred Moomey of Rockville, Walter and Mrs. Chauncy Stewart, north-east of Dannebrog, Harry and Albert on the old home farm north-east of Dannebrog, Ray and the Misses Lela, Agnes, and Mabel at home with their mother in Dannebrog. Nineteen grandchildren; two brothers and one sister in Denmark; one nephew, Barney Nielsen, north of Dannebrog, and a very large number of friends. The funeral from the Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon was very largely attended and all of Mr. Nielsen's children were here. His four sons and two sons-in-law, Stewart and Moomey, were the pall-bearers. Mr. Nielsen was sure one of the best of the old pioneers. He had the reputation of being one of the most honest and upright business men ever known here and he was sure good to his family and to his many friends. In the forty-eight years we had known him we had always found him to be a man that was strictly honest and reliable and a good friend to all that deserved and appreciated it. We join the many friends of the family in extending sympathy and condolence to the bereaved. HANS NIELSEN Compendium of History, Reminiscence and Biography Hans Nielsen, and old settler of Howard County, Nebraska, has for many years been prominently identified with the farming and business interests of his section of the state. He has always stood for the improvement and progress of his region, passing through all the early experiences of Howard County pioneering and is now a successful and well-to-do farmer and stock-man, with his family enjoying the esteem and respect of the entire community in which they reside. Mr. Nielsen was born in Lolland Island, Denmark, on May 2 1843, and grew to manhood there, coming to America at the age of 26 years. Landing in New York City, Jun 9, 1869, he went directly to Waukesha County, Wisconsin and remained there up to April, 1871, following farming during most of that time. He then came on to Nebraska, arriving in Howard County about June 1st, having driven the entire way with a team and bringing with him a small herd of cattle, which he helped drive through for another man, and carrying his clothes, etc. in the covered wagon, which was also his bed at night. Upon landing here he made entry for a homestead, lived on it a short time, then sold both rights and improvements. In August of the following year he engaged in the general mercantile business at Dannebrog and succeeded in building up a flourishing trade throughout the surrounding country. He carried this on for about thirteen years, at the end of that time, disposing of his store and purchasing a farm on section twenty-six, township fourteen, range eleven and immediately settled on his new property. Here he has lived up to the present time, having put on the place the finest improvements in the way of buildings, planting groves, erecting a handsome residence, etc. He is progressive and up to date in his method of operating his farm, engaging in diversified farming and stock raising and every appointment of the place bears evidence of his good management and thrift. On April 21, 1883, Mr. Nielsen was married in St. Paul, Nebraska, to Maria Sundstrom. She was born and reared in Sweden and came to America with her parents in 1879. Mr. and Mrs. Nielsen have eleven children named as follows: Walter, Bertha, Sophia Ralph, Emelie, Harry, Lela, Agnes, Ray, Albert and Mabel, all at home with the exception of Walter, Bertha and Sophia, who are married. Walter lives in South Dakota and Bertha and Sophia are living with their families in Howard County.
