Description	:	Harlan Duane Pond was born at his parents' home near Nodaway in Adams County, Iowa on July 17, 1929. He was the oldest of eight children born to Duane Elmer and Cordelia Mae (Walter) Pond. He attended country school east of Guss and Nodaway Consolidated School. At the age of 17, Harlan quit school to help support his family, trucking and running the gas station with his father. Read More	Harlan Duane Pond was born at his parents' home near Nodaway in Adams County, Iowa on July 17, 1929. He was the oldest of eight children born to Duane Elmer and Cordelia Mae (Walter) Pond. He attended country school east of Guss and Nodaway Consolidated School. At the age of 17, Harlan quit school to help support his family, trucking and running the gas station with his father. Harlan enlisted with the United States Army on April 4, 1951 and spent 11 months in Korea. He was then honorably discharged on January 3, 1953, but continued his service with the reserves. After his active military service he returned to Nodaway to work with his father. Harlan met his future wife, Dorothy Stanton, who was teaching in Nodaway. They were married on June 25, 1955 in Mt. Ayr, Iowa. To this union two children were born – Sheryl Lynette and Larry Duane. Harlan was the owner and operator of Pond Trucking which he ran for 40 years. In the 70's Harlan began driving trucks for the Nodaway Elevator while continuing his farm to market trucking in his off hours. In the mid-90's he began working part time with Kendrick & Heard until he retired. Harlan was a member of the American Legion, Joseph Thuman Post 646. He enjoyed gardening and working outside when his health permitted. He loved his grandchildren and looked forward to visits from siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews. He enjoyed his dogs and cats, but would never admit it. Harlan is survived by his wife Dorothy of Nodaway; children: Sheryl (Chris) Connolly of Lincoln, Nebraska and Larry (Becky) Pond of Nodaway; grandchildren: Deron Connolly of Tucson, AZ, Shannon Connolly of Alexandria, VA, Adam (Katie) Mattson of Villisca, and Anthony (Lacy) Pond of Villisca; sisters: Alice (Bob) Burch of Des Moines and Janice Woodard of Las Vegas, NV; sisters-in-law Rosemary Pond of Logan and Betty Jo Weeda of Elmhurst, IL; brothers-in-law Bill Welch of Des Moines, George Whitmore of Ft. Callhoun, NE, Wayne Pulley of Las Vegas, NV, and Walter (Evelyn) Stanton of Clarinda; and extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. Harlan was preceded in death by his parents; mother and father-in-law: Warren and Winona Stanton; siblings: Barbara Pulley, Leora Pundt, Shirley Whitmore, Robert Pond and Joyce Welch; brothers-in-law: Bill Pundt, Don Weeda, Warren Stanton and Jim Stanton; sister-in-law Sue Stanton; and grandson Ryan Connolly. Memorial services for Harlan Pond will take place on Saturday, March 22, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at the Villisca Presbyterian Church in Villisca. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the start of the service. Burial will be in the Nodaway Cemetery following the church service. A light lunch will be served at the Nodaway Community Building after the burial. Memorials are suggested to the Harlan Pond Memorial Fund. Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
