JAMESON - - At his home in Cherokee, Kans., at 10:45 p.m., Monday, January 17, 1887, Harland Jameson, aged 43 years, 8 months and 18 days. Harland Jameson, the subject of this sketch was born in Delaware county, Ohio, April 29th, 1843. Moved to Henry county Iowa, in 1854 where he lived until he came to Kansas in 1867. In 1865 he was wedded to Miss Amanda Foster, his now sorrow-stricken widow. In 1861, at the call of his country he enlisted in the U.S. Army. In battle at Helena, Arkansas, he was seriously wounded and subsequently captured and carried to Castle Thunder and Libby prison in which places he was confined for nine months, when he was exchanged and again joined his command and served till the expiration of his term of service in December, 1864, at which time he received an honorable discharge. Mr. Jameson seems to have been the subject of many religious impressions. In 1867 or in 1868 he united with the M.E. church and was baptized, but through removal he lost his membership. During the time he was a member of the church it is said he was not only consistent, but quite useful. During last summer he claimed to have found the favor of God, but did not unite with the church. Mr. Jameson was always timid and unobtrusive, never forcing himself into places and positions where he was not wanted. Indeed at times he would scarcely defend his own rights and privileges. There were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jameson eight children; four of these are deceased. The last one to die being a little girl of 3 years who met her fate by drowning, about eight months since. Mr. Jameson met his death by falling from the tramway at the Cherokee coal shaft, where he was employed as night watchman and while in the discharge of duty, between 10 and 11 o'clock at night Jan. 17th, 1887.
