Harley was born in Beatrice, NE to his parents, Harold and Laura (Siems) Bergmeyer. He grew up on the family farm near Clatonia, NE. He graduated from Clatonia High School in 1958. He was the starting point guard on Clatonia's undefeated State Championship basketball team in 1958. His team was inducted into the Nebraska State High School Athletics Hall of Fame. He received a Business Administration degree from Lincoln School of Commerce in 1960. He then began his professional career with the Bruning Company in Lincoln, NE where he became sales manager at age 21. When the company sold, he and his family moved back to DeWitt, NE and he started his long career as a banker. Harley was a community banker. He loved being able to help families and businesses grow and thrive in the communities he served. He served on many bank boards and was very involved with banking organizations and associations. Before he passed, he was the Chairman of First State Bank Nebraska based in Lincoln, NE, and he was a director of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Topeka and the Bank of Bennington, Bennington, NE. However, he spent the majority of his career as the President and CEO of Saline State Bank, Wilber, NE. He served on several other bank boards including NebraskaLand National Bank and Albion National Bank. He enjoyed being involved with the Nebraska Bankers Association (NBA) and the American Bankers Association (ABA). He was President of the NBA and served as a director and chaired several committees for the NBA through the years. He counted many of his NBA associates as his best friends. He was Treasurer of the ABA and also served on the ABA's board of directors and on several committees throughout his years of service. Harley also served for years on the Nebraska Electronic Transfer System (NETWORKS) board of directors, and he was a trustee of the Colorado Graduate School of Banking. He received several awards through the years including the Frank Bruning AG Banker of the Year Award of which he was especially proud. Harley was an avid supporter of the University of Nebraska. He served as Chairman of the University of Nebraska Foundation and was on the Foundation's Board for several years and also served on many committees for the Foundation. He loved Husker football, basketball, volleyball and baseball. He was a member of the Devaney Society and Directors Club within the University's athletic department. He and his wife, Marcia, attended many Husker athletic events through the years and were inducted into the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame. Harley was a very faithful person and his affiliation with his church was an important part of his life. He was a life long member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clatonia where he served as Chairman and Trustee. He also served as a member of the board of trustees of Wisconsin Synod Lutheran Church and as a Regent of the Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee, WI. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and ringing the church bell on Sundays. Harley was also involved in many other community and civic organizations including the Nebraska Czechs of Wilber, the Wilber Chamber of Commerce and SERTOMA Club and the Clatonia Rural Fire Protection District. He served as President of each of those organizations. Harley also served on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Community Foundation. Harley loved to work outdoors and plant trees. He developed an acreage where he planted and cultivated thousands of trees. He enjoyed farming and maintaining his properties. His greatest love was his family and friends. He had a lot of fun. No one epitomized the theory of working and playing hard more than Harley. He enjoyed telling stories and sharing many laughs. He enjoyed playing cards, going to coffee in the mornings, playing the piano, driving fast, dancing with Marcia and reading biographies. He was an avid fan of Winston Churchill and embraced his admonition to "Never Give In" which was demonstrated during his brave battle with cancer. The love of his life and greatest friend was Marcia (Fort) Bergmeyer, his wife of 53 years. "Har and Mar", as they are affectionately known, traveled a great deal and attended countless banking and Husker events together throughout the years. Harley was a devoted and loving father and grandfather. In addition to Marcia, he is survived by daughter, Heidi M. Cuca and her Fiancé, Tom Stephens; son and daughter-in-law, John and Kris Bergmeyer; grandchildren, Ben Cuca, Meg Cuca, Allison Bergmeyer, all of Lincoln; brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Joyce Holtmeier, DeWitt; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dan and Nancy Bergmeyer, Lincoln, Jerry and Judy Bergmeyer, Clatonia, Joel and Kay Bergmeyer, Lincoln. He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Bergmeyer; mother, Laura (Siems/Bergmeyer) Germer; step father, Arnold Germer; parents-in-law, Harold (Charlie) Fort and Harriet (Petersen) Fort; son-in-law and dear friend, Bud Cuca. FUNERAL SERVICES will be 10:30am Tuesday, September 29, Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clatonia. Rev. Steven Kahrs will officiate the Service. VISITATION will be 3-8pm Monday at Kuncl Funeral Home, Wilber (family will not be present at the Funeral Home). The family will be greeting friends Monday from 4-7 PM at the Clatonia Community Center, Clatonia. VISITATION will continue Tuesday at Church 1 hour prior to the Service. Interment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials in lieu of flowers to Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Clatonia, Wilber Fire and Rescue, or the University of Nebraska Foundation. Bergmeyer lived by the words of his idol, Winston Churchill: “Never, never, never give up.” He didn’t give up when he served his community as a banker, helping families and small businesses get their start. He fought hard against pancreatic cancer. The man dedicated to service and volunteerism died Saturday, after battling the cancer for about two years. He was 74. A visitation will be held today from 3 to 8 p.m. at Kuncl Funeral Home in Wilber, the town near where Bergmeyer lived most of his life. The family will be at Clatonia Community Center in Clatonia — Bergmeyer’s hometown — today from 4 to 7 p.m. Bergmeyer grew up on a farm near Clatonia, and throughout his life enjoyed working outside, growing trees and mowing. Banking interested him, and he wanted to help others who had dreams of creating businesses. He graduated from the Lincoln School of Commerce in 1960 and moved to a farm near DeWitt to work as a banker. “He had a lot of energy and liked to see the local businesses work,” said his wife, Marcia Bergmeyer. “He helped a lot of people do things as a small-town banker.” He was involved in numerous bank boards, and served as president of the Nebraska Bankers Association. He was especially proud to receive the Frank Bruning AG Banker of the Year award, a prize from the American Bankers Association. Bergmeyer knew Marcia because they were from nearby towns. They were married 53 years. The two were strong supporters of Husker sports and the University of Nebraska Foundation. He served on the foundation board for about 10 years, and as its chairman. In 2011 the Bergmeyers received the Bud Cuca Special Merit Award from the Nebraska Basketball Hall of Fame. Bergmeyer was an avid reader of any book about Churchill. Marcia said Churchill’s famous quote guided her husband along his life journey. “Through all of the (cancer) treatments and the bad stuff that he endured, he never complained.” In addition to his wife, Harley is survived by his daughter, Heidi M. Cuca; son, John Bergmeyer; three grandchildren; and multiple siblings. The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Clatonia.
