Description	:	Harley Emerson May, age 98, died on the 18th of September, 2012 at the Bethel Home in Viroqua. He was born on August 18, 1914 in Orient, South Dakota, the youngest sibling and grew up on the family farm where he worked hard alongside his family on the land and attended school. He was born on August 18, 1914 in Orient, South Dakota, the youngest sibling and grew up on the family farm where he worked hard alongside his family on the land and attended school. After high school Harley served in the CCC Camp in the Black Hills. He then moved to Chicago where he attended the Coyne Electric School. Harley married Alice Patterson on December 6, 1941. During World War II, he served as an Electrician's Mate First Class with the Navy Seabee's with most of his duty in England. After his military service he worked for Lindberg Engineering as a Maintenance Electrician and with Hobart Welder as a service man. He then owned an electric repair business for twenty-five years in Chicago. He retired to Avalanche, rural Westby in 1974 where he farmed and operated a repair business. In April of 1978 he married Clara Dolan and they farmed and took frequent vacations in Arkansas. He was a member of the LaBelle Masonic Lodge No. 84 of Viroqua, the Viroqua Eagles Aerie No. 2707, Running-Johnson-Ray VFW Post No. 3032 in Viroqua, and the Syverson-Funk American Legion Post No. 55 of Westby. Among his hobbies was a passion for stones, rocks, and crystals, which he polished and made jewelry. Harley began writing personal narratives about his life in his early 80's, after retiring and moving into Westby. Harley loved family and was active in all communities where he lived. He was proud of his South Dakota heritage and also loved living in the Driftless Area. Harley is survived by his wife, Clara, of Norseland Nursing Home in Westby, two daughters; five grandchildren; several nieces, other relatives and many friends, especially his Avalanche neighbors. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ralph and Merle May, and two sisters, Gladys May in infancy and Edna Cook. Burial in the Prairie View Cemetery in Orient, South Dakota.
