Peters American Legion Post No. 159, Hoven, SD, follows at German Zion Congregational Cemetery, Tolstoy. Harlin Calvin Hettich, son of Anna (Perman) and Christ C. Hettich, was born August 6, 1931 at Faulkton, SD. He was brought up near Tolstoy and attended rural school. Harlin married Ardella Dutt at Tolstoy on January 16, 1951. They settled on their farm five miles east of Tolstoy. Harlin served his country in the United States Army, being inducted September 3, 1952. Following his honorable discharge on August 24, 1954, he returned to the farm. Harlin and Ardella moved into Tolstoy in 1994 and continued to help with the farm for many years. Harlin operated Hettich Sand and Gravel into 2017. His faith in God was important to him, he served as Vice Chairman of the Board and Sunday School Superintendent at Tolstoy Wesleyan Church for many years. He and Ardella were generous with their time and money going on mission trips to Haiti, Honduras, Barbados, and Guatemala. Harlin did not shy away from serving on various boards and committees, including the Tolstoy and Sunshine Bible Academy School Boards, Chairman of the Tolstoy Town Board, and the Cenex Board to name a few. Although Harlin was a dedicated farmer, he was also a terrific welder and skilled carpenter, building his own house and shop in Tolstoy. Family members surviving Harlin include Ardella, his wife of 67 years; three sons—Pastor Reid (Joy) Hettich, Brad (Sue) Hettich and Kelly (Gwen) Hettich; one daughter, Sherry (Jerry) Brickner; one brother, Lloyd (Elaine) Hettich; ten grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father on August 8, 1958, his mother on December 29, 1993, two brothers (James and an infant), and three sisters (Lucille Haar and two infants.)
