Description	:	Harold Clausen, 93, of Genoa passed away Friday February 16, 2018 at the Countryside Home in Madison, surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday February 23rd at the Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 22nd from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. also at the Church. Visitation will continue Friday from 10:00 A.M. until 11:00 A.M. at the church. Harold and his twin brother Herbert were born May 25, 1924 on a farm south of Lindsay, NE to Karsten and Emma (Damgaard) Clausen. The boys weighed about 4 and 5 pounds respectively. They were later joined by siblings Eva, Gunnar, Alta, and Melvin. Harold was baptized and confirmed at St. Ansgar (Rosenborg) Lutheran Church of rural Lindsay. Harold attended rural Platte County schools through 8th grade. Harold and Herbert initially worked as farmhands before enlisting in the Navy in February 1944. Harold did his basic training in Faragut, Idaho. He was part of the Carrier Aircraft Service Unit 51 serving in the Pacific Theater, spending time in Guam, Ulithi, Marcus Islands and Japan before being discharged on May 25, 1946. Following his discharge, Harold returned to farming. He married Roberta Truxell on June 7, 1953 at Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa. Their son David was born in 1955 and daughter Diane in 1957. Harold spent his adult life farming south of Lindsay and passed along his love of farming to his son and grandson and was proud when all three were working together...for several years it was Harold in the combine, Ryan in the grain cart and Dave hauling with the truck during harvest. Over the years there were many family vacations including short fishing and camping trips in Nebraska and vacations to visit family in Colorado often taking one or both grandmothers. Harold and Roberta enjoyed traveling! They traveled to Hawaii where they attended a NE football game and also took an Alaskan cruise. They also took a 3 week trip to Europe with his sister Alta and husband George Berkstresser where they visited seven countries and relatives in Denmark and Sweden. One of Harold's greatest loves was hunting! Opening day of pheasant season was an exciting day. Throughout the season, Harold and Dave, along with Gunnar and his son Terry and Harry (Slim) Pearson and his son Gary would meet to go pheasant hunting. Over the years, as the pheasant population dwindled, Harold continued to go on grouse hunting trips to Halsey and Valentine with Gunnar and Terry. Harold also hunted deer in the Pine Ridge are and went elk hunting in Idaho and Colorado. If anyone suggested going hunting, Harold was always willing! As a member of Augustana Church, Harold was on the church council for 12 years and served as treasurer for 2 years and was also on the Platte County ASCS board for 20 years. Harold was a faithful member of the Genoa Lions Club and a life member of the Edward H. Larson American Legion Post #144 were he served as a member of the Honor Guard and also a member of the VFW Club. After retiring from full time farming and moving to Genoa in 1990, Harold continue to come out to the farm to help as long as he was able. Together he and Roberta took care of their garden, lawn and flower beds in town. Harold was hospitalized in April of 2016 and never was able to build himself back to his normal. For over a year, Harold needed the assistance of family and in home care givers. On July of 2017 he became a resident of Countryside Home in Madison. While the adjustment was not exactly easy, Harold shared much laughter at the Home where because of the care and compassion of the staff they became his friends. Staff members commented that you had to listen carefully to Harold because he was known for his quiet "one liners". Harold is survived by his wife Roberta, daughter Diane ({Patrick) Miller of Newman Grove, son Dave (Lori) Clausen of Lindsay and grandson Ryan (and fiance' Amanda Vodvarka.) He is also survived by 2 brothers; Gunnar and Melvin and 2 sisters; Eva Jepsen and Alta Berkstresser and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Herbert, granddaughter Rachel Clausen, and brothers-in-law; Harvey Jepsen and George Berkstresser and sisters-in-law Gertie Clausen and Lila Clausen.
