Read More	On July 7, 2011, Harold Bruce Amsbaugh (Bruce) passed away after a sixteen-month battle with lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Bill Amsbaugh; and his first wife, Carol Strother. Bruce Amsbaugh was born July 15, 1933 in Yakima, Washington to Harold William Amsbaugh and Russella Castillo. Raised in Wapato, Washington, Bruce was the son of the town's pharmacist where he spent many hours working in his father's store. He later, at the insistence of his father, attended Washington State University to become a pharmacist. There he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and a member of the varsity swim team. Although Bruce loved being a Coug, he was not destined to graduate. After his third year, under protest from his parents, Bruce left WSU to pursue a career as a Naval Aviator. In 1955, Bruce arrived in Pensacola, Florida to attend the Naval Cadet program. In 1956, he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in the USMC. After two years of active duty, Bruce joined many of his fellow pilots and accepted a position in the world of the commercial airlines, first with Pan-American Grace (Panagra) Airlines flying out of Lima, Peru, and later with United Airlines. In 1960, Bruce returned to the US and married his first wife, Carol Strother, a fellow graduate of Wapato High School. Bruce and Carol Amsbaugh had four children, raising them first in Chicago, Illinois, and later in San Jose, California, and Issaquah, Washington. In 1991, Carol passed after a sixteen-year long battle with breast cancer. In 1993, Bruce married his second wife, Linda Norton, also a product of Wapato, Washington. Throughout his life, Bruce loved his life as a pilot. Upon retirement from his thirty-five years with United Airlines, he continued to fly as a private pilot in his Cessna float plane. Much of his free time was spent around his two favorite activities: fishing and golf. Like a true pilot and fisherman, Bruce told many tall tales. Those that knew him became familiar with his stories of adventure in South America, growing up in Eastern Washington, and flying around the world. Bruce spent his later years in Palm Desert, where he found an outlet for his love for flying by volunteering at the Palm Springs Air Museum. Bruce is survived by his second wife, Linda Norton Amsbaugh; daughters, Gretchen Kiminski and Beth Woerner; sons, Bruce Amsbaugh and Donald Amsbaugh; step-sons, Michael and Mitchell Norton; thirteen grandchildren; and his sister, Judy Douglas of Kennewick, Washington. Bruce will be cremated and interred at the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington. Published in The Desert Sun on July 14, 2011.
