About twenty-five had arranged to spend the afternoon at the pond. Charles Tidd and Harold had taken the skiff and rowed nearly to the east end of the pond, and had been out on the bank. Intending to rejoin the party, which was about straight north of the house, Charles had gotten in the boat, and was sitting in the rear seat. Harold was in the front and stuck his oar into the bank to push the boat off. The motion drove the boat nearly to the middle of the pond, and capsized it. Harold, not being able to swim, sank immediately, but Charles went to his relief and after a hard struggle, succeeded in getting him near enough to the boat to seize it, both shouted for help, and Joe McKay and Clyde Forbes came to the rescue at once, but as they had nearly two hundred yards to run, they were out of breath when they arrived on the scene. All three of the rescuers did everything in their power to get the body to shore. They were in the water less than ten minutes, but it was too long. Drs. Minnick and White arrived in a short time and for hours every possible means was used to restore consciousness, but in vain. Once the physicians thought they could notice a few feeble pulse beats and the color seemed to be returning to his cheeks, and·hopes were entertained for his recovery, but it was of short duration, and after about 4:30 no signs of life were noticeable. Nothing has occurred in years that has so affected the entire community as this sad event, for Harold was a universal favorite. Harold D., son of Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Starrett, was born at Clarks, Nebraska April 1, 1889, died at Palmer, Nebraska, June 1, 1913, age 24 years and 2 months. Buried at Clarks Nebraska June 4, 1913. He leaves a father and mother, two brothers, William Starrett of this place and Eugene Starrett of St. Libory, four sisters, Mrs. Mame Mooney of Aurora, Nebraska, Mrs. Lucy Hall of Del Norte Colorado, Mrs. Lottie Talman of Clarion Iowa, and Miss Julia Starrett of this place to mourn his decease. The sympathy of the entire neighborhood is extended to the sorrowing family in their bereavement.
