He graduated from Palouse High School in 1955. He joined... Read More	Harold E. (Gene) Griffin of Viola passed away May 16, 2013, at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow. He was 75. He was born July 20, 1937, in Colfax to Harold and Elsie (Griner) Griffin. He was later joined by a brother, Jerry. Gene lived in the Colfax area with his family and attended Martha Washington Elementary School in Colfax in 1945 and 1946. He moved to Palouse in 1947, where he lived with his grandma and step-grandpa for a time until his family moved to the Palouse area where they made their family home. He graduated from Palouse High School in 1955. He joined the U.S. Air Force in March 1956 and was discharged January 1960, having served some time in Greenland. He married Carol Gottschalk December 1961. Together they had two daughters, his pride and joy, Gayle and Paula. They later divorced. In 1998, Gene married Jane Cryder Dec. 4, 1998, at Coeur d'Alene. Together they made a home in the country that he was proud of but also enjoyed "ribbing" Jane about all her stuff and how much it annoyed him when we all know how much he loved his life and how much he enjoyed being around his daughters and their families. Keeping with his love of being in the country and farming, he was employed as an Idaho state brand inspector and self-employed farmer. At the time of his retirement in 1999 he was working for McGregor's in Palouse. Never one to sit idle, Gene did seasonal work for Chuck Goetz Farms and Kyle Hawley Farms. A jack of all trades and master of none (although we all know he was a master of many things), he could be found in his shop tinkering on one of his latest mechanical projects, doing leather-work in his saddle shop, or assisting any friend or neighbor with the project of the day. Gene enjoyed raising cattle, horses, roping and fishing. In the last few years he became known for his famous potatoes from Griff's Garden. We can all smile and remember Gene best when he was telling us to "Cowboy Up!" Gene was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jane; brother Jerry (Idella); daughter Gayle (Wayne); daughter Paula (Lonnie); special nephews Dwayne (Wendy), Brad and Monte (Jennifer); eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
